Absolute legendary bop. Kelis wasn't content being 'Milkshake' girl anymore so che cut off the hair, got an 808 and came back with this monumental hip-hop track. She was actually riding the flow and keeping up, spitting some pretty fantastic lines too, backed by the braggadocio earworm chorus. Once again she was switching it up, not letting herself get too comfortable, and it worked. Penned as her comeback track, it lived up to expectations.

Bossy went all the way to the Top 20 on the Hot 100, only her second song to do so, and was certified 2x Platinum later that year. Are those like ringtone sales or something? Cus holy ****, forget me calling Bounce her best-selling song. This track gave Kelis her first and only Top 10 album in the US too. Though it wasn't as much a runaway success overseas, it still stands as a big moment in her career.

And you all butchered it at #20. Sigh.

Starting with the good. This harkens back to a more fun side of Kelis for ECNEICSNOC, "I definitely miss the **** talking side of Kelis. This song reminds me of Get Me Bodied a bit." Flawless tracks can sound similar. Diarrhoea doesn't love it, but it does open the "concept" of the album to him, "I really want to give this a 10 because it nearly became a career-saving hit, but the rap is pretty crap, and even though the chorus grew on me it still sounds a bit empty. The verses are a bit of a slay, the diamonds line is executed brilliantly, but yeah, I can imagine that this sounded a bit disappointing, the lack of Neptunes production doesn't help either. That said, it perfectly sets up this album; I always felt this album was a but gormless and deliberately shallow, this is probably the most obvious example." If only all of our critics could be so eloquent.

Doogle, who loves everything, HATED this " It gets higher than a 0 for being good for about 3 seconds." The bicycle / icy cool line right? Latinazza also despises it, saying her score was "being generous here, absolute trash. I can't believe that out of only two top 40 hits in the US this is one of them." I think you can though. This is definitely one of them songs that gets played at cookouts hosted by Khia and Ts Madison

' persona she uses on this (and **** Them Bitches) is so unconvincing I can't help but find it adorable.

That's the end for Kelis Was Here. I've defended it pretty hard for most of the rate so I guess I'll eulogise it too. This is definitely an imperfect album, both in song lengths, the excessive tracklist and some ideas that were not well implemented at all. I dare say it's even her worst album, but this IS Kelis we're talking about so that's still not much of an insult.

Kelis was really hitting above her weight on this one, she got a taste of outside producers on Tasty and now she dumped the Neptunes for real to find her own sound. I love this album because it's true to Kelis as an artist, the attitude and the persona, while both expanding her musical horizons and developing in areas she's already explored. The style changed, the music changed, the producers changed but Kelis didn't change. As she tells us on 'Circus', she's "not a rapper" but "still spit a few bars" and that's so Kelis.

Granted, some of these experiments go awfully wrong and should never have even been released, but for the most part it's a worthwhile trial for her. She brings the best out of garbage like will.i.am and that's testament to her power already. Whether she's rapping on Bossy, yelling on Blindfold Me, cooing on Living Proof, singing her heart out on Trilogy, interpolating classical standards on Like You or bringing back 80's funk on 80's Joint: It's still Kelis through-and-through. As her first expedition entirely on her own I think we can afford her some leeway with this one and focus on the positives, and there are a lot more than the detractors would try to tell you.

It would be pure killer without the filler, I was really exaggerating my Food bashing early on but some of these bitches HATE this album
