Vancouver gets hot in the summer. This is a myth. Espically if you live in the inland parts of the city it easily reaches 35-37C every summer. It's even humid too, so it feels hotter than it actually is.
By the water it is cooler, but still pretty hot.

Where in Alberta did you even live? Calgary or Edmonton hasn't seen a July temperature lower than 7C since 1999. I don't ever remember there being frost in the summer. In fact this past summer the temperature only dropped below 10C on maybe like 5 occasions.
The only summer in the past decade that was cool was 2010. Every other summer has been hot and dry with the occasionally nasty thunderstorm.
