It sold a lot of copies because it had a lot of big songs. I don't see how appealing to adults has helped her much, mostly because she doesn't seem to appeal to adults. She certainly has taken some aggressive steps to re-vamp her public image in favor of a more sophisticated look, but when your album cover is a Gaga-cycle, a few classy appearances thrown in with a meat dress and a beheaded dress don't really stand out.
It's not like adults buy any more pop albums than teens, either. I think genre-taste is a better defining-characteristic of album buyers. I know plenty of non-adults who willingly purchase Taylor Swift's and Drake's latest albums, but none of them are going to buy a pop album. I'm not saying she shouldn't try to broaden the scope of her fanbase, because we all know she needs to, but I don't think she should invest too much in this adult "album-buying" demographic that has shown little more than passive interest thus far. They don't seem willing to buy her new album, even after two fully-fledged adult-ready singles considering most of her albums sales are still from dedicated fans in the first few weeks, and they haven't been very effective at boosting her single sales either. Lord knows we don't need another Elton John collaboration already, especially if it's going to turn out as a snoozefest.
She should focus on doing pop and doing it big and letting the adult demographic come. I would say the adult demographic this year has been interested with two things: Adele and LMFAO. You figure out why that is and what its implications are.
