I've always said streaming is the unavoidable immediate future, because it is so much more convenient than any alternative. It's even more convenient than stealing music.
But that doesn't mean artists should settle for the current streaming business model. Spotify is legitimately robbing most artists with it's non-subscription streams and in general under-paying all artists. Artists should not feel obligated to offer their music through any particular streaming service or submit to bullying by said streaming service if they refuse.
I think artists would be better served by demanding just compensation for their work, shopping around for streaming distributors (like in the film industry), and increasing competition in the streaming arena, rather than giving in to a single service like Spotify or all of the services out of desperation. Investors realized a few years back that the Spotify is unsustainable, or at the very least capped in its potential; they
have to offer pathetic compensation to artists in order to even turn a profit. I feel like continued acceptance of that model will only damage the album as an art form and further encourage an industry built on manufactured one-off hits.
