06. Britney Spears “Break The Ice"
Album: Blackout
Genre: Pop
Producer: Danja
US Billboard Hot 100: #43
We have already seen her response to the paparazzi in
Piece Of Me, after that I listed her come back single about her cheating boyfriend, and now it’s time for the best single she released this year. Blackout was without a doubt an excellent era, musically speaking, and
Break The Ice was the third pop gem to come from that album. This song stood out the first moment I heard Blackout, the intro caught my attention immediately as Britney gives a message to her fans, ‘It‘s been a while, I know I shouldn‘t have kept you waiting, but I‘m here now”.
Break The Ice is the type of song that Britney is used to deliver, a fun pop dance track with a sexy message. Her voice has the right amount of attitude the song needs and the clever and sexy lyrics are simply amazing,
“I’m gonna hit defrost on ya, let’s get it blazing’” is my favorite line. The disappointing animated video would’ve been at least decent, if it had something to do with the song, but that doesn’t really matter. Once again, the princess of pop released one of the best singles of the year. Bow.
05. OneRepublic “Stop & Stare”
Album: Dreaming Out Loud
Genre: Pop/Rock
Producer: Greg Wells
US Billboard Hot 100: #12
After the phenomenal success of their first single featuring Timbaland,
Apologize, I thought they weren’t gonna be able to top that song, but I was so wrong. This song was their chance to prove they could deliver a track on their own, and that’s exactly what they did here.
Stop & Stare is an excellent mid-tempo rock anthem with the kind of hook you’d expect from someone like Ryan Tedder, who has written many hits for Leona Lewis among others. Tedder’s emotional vocals put the song in another level as he sings memorable lyrics such as “You'd give anything to get what's fair, but fair ain't what you really need” and
“Stop and stare, I think I'm moving but I go nowhere.” The video for the song is confusing at the beginning, but all starts making sense at the end. Overall, OneRepublic left their one-hit wonder status in the dust and released one of the best tracks of the year, I can’t wait to see what they have to offer with their next album.
