Tropical cyclones consist of organized thunderstorms around a low pressure center. If you look at the GIF of Hurricane Nicole that I posted above, all of the colored areas are thunderstorms, with the darker colors representing colder cloud tops (more intense thunderstorms which will produce more rain and stronger winds). These systems don't drag water with them, but they do derive a lot of thermal energy from the water that they are over. That's why they can't survive when they pass over colder waters.
