Not really. Many artists have waved goodbye to their former image and changed the way the GP saw them.
Like someone mentioned Justin Bieber...he changed his image and made hits + a great selling album. A great comeback overall.
Also Selena Gomez kinda changed her image, made good singles and now the GP loves her.

The GP still doesn't like Justin Bieber.

Go to any comment section on any article about him. What made his album sell was the fact that is was a really good album with really good singles. And no one cares about Selena Gomez.

Again, they like the music but she's had no impact like Bieber.
At the end of the day, it's all about the music. The cool factor means nothing, otherwise ANTI would have sold more than "Cheek To Cheek" and "LEMONADE" would be past 2m in WW sales, which it isn't.

We just need her to deliver a #1 smash hit that everyone can enjoy. You can push a song that is "single worthy" to you all you want but if the GP isn't feeling it then it won't get you anywhere. That's what happened with the tragedy that is Marry The Night. I'd take me a shallow bussy popping club song that smashes everywhere any day over an over-the-top song with some over complex lyrics that most people can't remember to sing along to when they're in their cars or at the clubs

Not even #1 singles are all that important.
'Work' was #1 for, like, two months and Rihanna is struggling to sell out arenas and ANTI had to be bought by Samsung to sell.
It takes a collection of good songs to sell an album. If those good songs are pushed to radio and promoted, the album will sell.
