First, they never said the world would end. Second, they were incredible for their time with studying the skies and the stars. This day has an astronomical significance, so that's where their prediction of enlightenment came in. And it's not like that's their first ridiculous belief. They thought the world would end if their king and queen didn't sacrifice blood from their tongue and penis. Doesn't change the fact that they were incredible with astronomy.
