I'm not sure Clinton trying to go for the white independent centrist will prove efficient. I think it will probably scare off more people among minorities (hispanics, african-americans, LGBTs) than it will bring in people among that demo.

Tim Kaine also got an award for his work on Project Exile. It was a program that set up long mandatory minimums in Virginia concerning gun crimes. However, the Congressional Black Caucus and anti-prison advocates called the program racist and disproportionately hurt black communities leading to more mass incarceration.

Black women AKA the Democratic base have had the highest turnout of any demographic group in the last two Presidential elections. And if you think that turnout will drop precipitously because there's no Obama, you're in for a surprise. And that's not even taking into account the big surges in Hispanic voter registration.

Turnout will drop because there's no Obama. The question is to what degree, and I think Clinton's choice tonight won't help.
Surges in hispanic voter registration are also due to surges in hispanic population. It doesn't mean the turnout will increase.

He really is the male equivalent to Hillary.

Thankfully Trump is her opponent. The Clinton/Kaine ticket is basically tone-deaf faux-progressiveness ("Yeah, I supported that then... but look at me now! *dabs*"), but it's pit against bigoted and religious zealots like Trump/Pence, so it forces people on the left to support it.

There is no guarantee turnout will drop. Black people hate Trump. That alone will be a huge motivating factor. But I'll admit that it's hard to predict.

Hispanic turnout as a share of the Hispanic population might not increase but absolute increases in Hispanic turnout will increase their share of the electorate, which could be a big deal (and a huge part of why a state like Arizona is considered a swing state).
