It was a combination of the negative publicity and the mid-era blackout. While I somewhat agree with Retro, some of the GP doesn't really get influenced by the media, they just care about a good (or bad) song on the radio. But some of them really believe what the media says. For example, my brother isn't a big fan of pop culture and such, but he reads a lot of pop culture-related stuff (all it takes is one dramatic title, and the clicks will come) on these social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, etc... Why do you think BEYONCÉ sold 600k+ copies on the first week despite not having any smash hit leading to the album release? People were basically blindly buying it not knowing anything about it's content (just like with BTW) because it was a surprise release
and because it was all over the media. I was actually surprised at how many people started praising Beyoncé out of nowhere as if she was the second coming.

If the media says ARTPOP is a huge massive flop (even though it isn't) the GP is going to believe it
This is just the way it is. The GP don't form their own opinions. The media influences them to think the same way they do. So if the media wants to tear you down, that's exactly what's going to happen
