Well during the mixtape eras Rihanna was, as we all know, considered a Beyoncé clone and no one really took her seriously. It was during GGGB and Rihanna started to develop her own true identity that the "feud" really started to form. Beyoncé stans were (understandably) resentful for people saying that Rihanna was "replacing" Beyoncé, and Rihanna stans were desperate to get back at the Bey stans who said Rihanna was nothing but a second-rate copy.
And there have been messy moments on both sides. Rihanna's old publicist, Jonathan, admitted that he was the one that spread rumors about Rihanna and Jay-Z having an affair (Rihanna had no knowledge of this). I also remember back in 2009 some of Bey's people, including her assistant, were talking **** about Rihanna on Twitter, but deleted everything once they found out that people could see their conversations. But through it all, Rihanna and Beyoncé have always remained a friendly rapport. Rihanna has stated several times that Beyoncé is one of her biggest inspirations, and is constantly gushing over her. And Beyoncé has said that her & Jay consider her to be like family.
