I rewatched 'The Gift' last night. I don't know why it's classified as a thriller. I mean, I do. But it's scarier than most horror movies I've seen. The first time I saw it was when I was 10 or 11 years old. I was staying at a friend's and it was on cable. Anyway, I slept in a sleeping bag and I wet it. The following day, I wouldn't get out of the sleeping bag. I just hopped around his house in it all morning, then I called my dad at like 11am and asked him to pick me up, went back home, showered and changed and then went back to my friend's. It would have been so obvious that I pissed in the sleeping bag. Pretty sure it was in the washing machine when I went back. Not even sure why I went back
Anyway, amazing movie. Amazing cast.

Seriously scary for a thriller though. Scary enough to be considered a horror.
I'm honestly baffled that it's actually a part of the series. If someone told me it was a cheap ripoff of the series, I'd totally believe it. None of the tapes were scary. The magician one was okay because of the action but the story was dumb. The parallel world one is plain idiotic; picture Safe Haven but with no suspense and an even more stupid outcome. The Mexican skating one was my "favorite", but the ending wasn't resolved. While I understand that the wraparound is supposed to be a commentary on society, it was really, really stupid. I also hated how the tapes had editing (whether it's music, slow mo, zoomed shots, whatever). I know that the first tape is supposed to be a documentary and the last one is a skating video, but it still took me out of the stories and made them less scary (not that they would've been scary to begin with). 
I came here all excited cause of the new trailer but if it's really that bad. VHS 2 was such an improvement and I loved all the segments in it.
but it does give me VOD/straight to DVD teas tbh.
I loved it.
