It seems to the the formula for shows that get too big for their own good. Idol is a good example. It adds stuff no one care about (i.e. -- this year's Coke sponsored "Talk to the Idols" segment, hour long result shows stuffed with filler). Focus is totally lost and what was alluring at first gets snowed in by the fluff.
I remember someone creating an ideal schedule a page back in addition to my own, but I was thinking it'd be kind of neat if TRL lived on via MTV.com with a daily live broadcast. I'm guessing it would cost a lot less (I have no data to back that up, just an assumption). In fact, most MTV music video shows should move to online broadcasts. With social networking being the giant that it is now, it only makes sense --- watch anytime, share the link with friends, dig back in archives as desired. The audience is seemingly limitless if promotion is done right.
Here's my list. TRL, SF, and Deuce could issue a new show M-F and include user content (i.e. -- U R Here reports) and other web 2.0-esk items that is making the web what it is now.
TRL on MTV.com
Sucker Free on MTV.com
The Hot 20 on MTV.com - perhaps a weekly updated show spinning the top streams
The Deuce on MTV.com - same as You Rock the Deuce, just a niftier title
Perhaps the online shows can also have a re-airing each morning on MTV to make up for a lack of actual video blocks and to help promote the new online format also.
I.E.:
6AM - Music Videos
8AM - TRL on MTV.com
9AM - TBD
11AM - Sucker Free on MTV.com
11:30AM - The Deuce on MTV.com
Food for thoughts...
