It was a lot of reasons that it went the way it did. It had no reason to flop on one hand, and on another hand they didn't handle the era well, imo. One reason being that Russian Roulette was too 'dark' for a lot of people at the time. They were used to UmbrellaStopTheMusicTakeABowLiveYourlifeDisturbian na.
Had they gone with a different, more accessible lead single, I think it could've done better. I've alway thought "Fire Bomb" or "Photographs" would've done well.
I think people bought the incident-milking to an extent. It was easy to but into- people hated him SO much. The only people who didn't were teenage black girls who thought it was Rihanna's fault. She definitely overdid it though.
