Speaking as someone who hated Bruno Mars two hours ago, the album deserves a better score than that.
The critics' excuse will be he sounds like sting, Micheal Jackson, Stevie wonder, prince and list every artist from which Bruno took inspiration in this album. The silly thing is that they criticized his debut for being too commercial and now they are complaining that there's no just the way you are in this album.
I'm fine with him mimicking sounds of the past, he does a damn good job of it. People tried to use the same critiques against Born This Way, that it took too heavy an inspiration from older eras.
I'd rather artists make modern updates on older sounds than put out the same Dr. Luke/EDM radio **** that every other artist is doing no one can say that artists other than Bruno are making music like this today, and the music itself is ****ing good. That is what matters.
Critics are the most useless thing for me that excist, they are just random people, who also put in useless arguments and thoughts into reviews, and at the end of the day it;'s their opinion, which is imo. nothing worth more than mine or anybody's else opinion.
Music has been pretty liniar these years, it's mainly the same kind of producers, patterns and platforms used over and over again. Bruno with UJ and also Beyoncé with 4 as another example to me, have made amazing cohensive records with some throwback inspiration, which in these days, just gets labeled as "copying" in one way or another, while people who use the same recycled patterns in half of their albums get praised with 4 to 5 stars, just because they jump on the bandwagon of the moment.
Once again they will be asking the question but who is Bruno Mars as an artist and where his heart lies, as if the title of the album didn't give a clear vision of what he's trying to do and I am sure they will say the album lacks emotion and Bruno isn't being genuine.

J-esper, I'm not sure if you know that but that was the main reason he didn't got a record deal for so many years People didn't know what audience they should cater him to and he refused to help them in that. So if he didn't when he was broke, there's now way he gonna do it now... he's an established act already, with supporting label having his back.
They are a mess I swear. Now they want him to do just love songs because they believe that this's what he's born to sing about and what fits him the best. And you all do remember that the other side from his debut was the most acclaimed song because bruno showed another side of himself and they all said that the album ended with the best song and with what should have the album sounded like.

Jason Derulo, Usher, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Jay Sean, etc... those are artists whose music lacks identity. Even when I hated Bruno I certainly never thought he was generic or that his music wasn't unmistakably his.

They have been saying this since his debut got released because he covered different styles in the album. They feel that Bruno has an identity crises and doesn't know what kind of artist he wants to be.
But it's the closing dip into deep-soul pleading on "If I Knew" that assures the brightness of his future: for once, it's just a style, not a specific copy of another artist, and it allows Bruno the space to express his own sweet character
They want that from him, I mean if I knew would fit perfectly in his debut. They loved young girls too which just screams D&H.

No I didn't know that , I am personally just tired of the main problems in the musicbusiness, I swear if I could I would re-organise it all. People like Bruno deserve so much more, and they can never do it right in the end
