US urban radio hits =/= global smash hits ... this is the whole point of the thread. Katy took something that was local and made it global.

And let's not act like there's never been a global country or rock smash hit.

Trap's origins go nowhere near as far back as those other genres.

There simply was no other global mainstream trap hit until Dark Horse.

Not sure why some people find that so, so incredibly hard to admit.

I think it definitely had an impact on trap music blending into the mainstream, especially as far as becoming commercially viable worldwide.

Cause you so hell-bent on trying to give white artist credit for Black people's music. You're the type of person who would say Adele made soul music mainstream, when it's already been done by Aretha Franklin and so may others before, and also overlook current soul artist.

There have been globally successful even legendary black soul artists, let alone songs, in the past. I don't see the correlation lol

Except the only people trying to turn it into a race thing are the people refusing to acknowledge a white woman's impact on the genre and ability to popularise it. Nobody is claiming Katy invented the genre. Katy took it to the mainstream in a way that hadn't been done before. Simple as that.

Also why would I say Adele made soul music mainstream when soul was hugely popular WW in the past? However, Adele did contribute to resurrecting soul music in a very obvious way. Idk why y'all are bringing up these genres that have been around for decades upon decades (rock, soul, country etc.) when trap is a relatively new genre in comparison.

All this shows me is that they were moderate successes (aka mainstream) outside the United States. And none of them have anything to do with dark horse.

None of those songs would have been as big (or should I say, moderate) WW without Dark Horse. They probably would have still done well in the US, but even then, likely not Top 2.

This is true. No one is saying Katy started trap music. This thread is simply asking if she's opened doors for trap since she's really the first one to popularize it in the mainstream (as what Billboard claims too, like Britney with dubstep). And that deserves to be credited

None of those songs sound remotely similar to dark horse. Saying dark horse opened the door for them would be like saying Uptown Funk opened the door for Hello because they're both pop songs.

Not to mention drunk in love found success at the same time dark horse was smashing.

It's not about 'sounding similar' it's about bringing elements from one genre into another and providing a transition from Katy's 'pop trap' to what you consider 'real trap'. There weren't any songs with trap beats slaying hard WW before DH. It opened the door for more urban and trap music (which imo, is still being opened... we're yet to have a true WW full on trap hit). I do think a black artist will do it eventually though, but I wouldn't say DIL/TQ/Panda qualify for that.

There are no elements of UF that are also in Hello. There are trap elements in DH and "real" trap music. You're making invalid comparisons to try and downplay DH's involvement in popularising trap music.
