That's a lame excuse and not really true at all. Fun songs are popular because they're fun, and bubblegum has been in for decades, but plenty of critically praised/artistic albums have also been huge hits.
Rated R, while a lovely pop/R&B/urban album, is hardly a prime example of "original artistic talented creativity." It's just a slightly more abstract album from a completely non-abstract pop artist, and usually those don't work out very well.
