They've both had big singles (Complicated, Girlfriend; Because Of You, Stronger). They've both had big albums (Let Go, Under My Skin, The Best Damn Thing; Breakaway, All I Ever Wanted, Stronger) and they've both had less successful albums (Goodbye Lullaby, Avril Lavigne; Thankful, My December). Though even their "flop" albums at least had one decent single (What The Hell, Here's To Never Growing Up; Miss Independent, Never Again).
Also, both have had some sabotaging from their record labels. Kelly had to fight to release My December, but Avril also had to fight to release Goodbye Lullaby. Unlike Kelly though, Avril didn't recover with her next album. Maybe her 6th album will make the comeback she needs, the kind of comeback Kelly had with AIEW.
Kelly's bigger in the US, Avril's bigger in other countries like Japan.
It's just silly how people fight over singers who are so similarly matched. It doesn't really matter. Avril and Kelly are both great and have both had their ups and downs.

But Goodbye Lullaby sold about as much as All I Ever Wanted/Stronger didn't it? Avril is clearly bigger

Doesn't matter how you put it: Avril had more commercial success and longevity worldwide.

Well what country are you in?
Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) was a Top 10 hit in 23 countries (#1 in several), and a Top 20 hit in 31 countries. My Life Would Suck Without You was a Top 20 hit in 21 countries. So no, it isn't limited to 1 era.
Avril is obviously a bigger force in certain continents like Asia, but don't act like Kelly has had no success outside the US since Breakaway, because that's simply not true.
And Kelly is definitely bigger than Avril in the US by a good sized margin.

Not I'm With You in the US. And I never said the other two weren't, I was talking to someone who was acting like SUBG was a non factor.

Stronger was a big hit in the US, not in Europe. And the whole PbP-Era was a disaster, no way to sugar-coat it. Kelly was never big in Asia and Latin America where Avril is still a thing.

Stronger was a hit in Europe as well as the US, it even made the overall Europe Top 10 and charted in the Top 10 of many European countries. Heartbeat Song was a hit in several European countries, and also made the overall Europe Top 10.

Let's take a look at some stats:
Stronger
Gold Austria, Norway
Platinum Sweden, Denmark.
All small markets. That's all. Doesn't look like a hit to me. And no, it didn't go No 1 anywhere here. Those are AIRPLAY Charts, good lord.
Heartbeat Song
Gold Norway
Platinum Sweden...R.I.P.
Do I need to go on?

Avril like... her first two albums outsold Kelly's discography. But Kelly is much more relevant today whereas Avril will forever be stuck in 2003. Talent won in the end

I always thought about that TALENT always wins. Don't say talent is only pertaining on vocals. Oopss wait additional from Avril, can play piano, guitar and drums while singing. Talent always won in the end.

It went #1 in Belgium and Slovenia. And Top 10 in all of the other countries I mentioned. It was a WW hit.
Heartbeat Song DID do well in several other countries, especially the UK.

You live in dream world.
Stronger didn't go No 1 in Belgium, get your facts together. It's peaked at No 1 on the Airplay Charts. Please google Ultratip vs Ultratop Charts, thanks . It peaked at 27 in Germany and didn't do any better in France. The whole era was a disaster in continental Europe, as was MD (- the lead single), as was WiR, as was PbP. Breakaway is her only successful one here.
Avril's overall intrnational career >>

Avril Lavigne
/endthread
like every non-Avril and Clarkson stan comfirmed this fact! Avril has biggest following on social media, bigger streaming, bigger album and singles sales! Clarkson is just local popstar with Breakaway and Stronger being her only eras where she was relevant outside of the US for a little bit.
