It's both, but the continent as a whole should be named Oceania IMO. I did this research a little while ago and "officially" Australia is the name of the country and continent, while Oceania refers to the Australian region with New Zealand and the archipelagos around it.
Mess at it taking 4 pages for someone to point out the existence of Zealandia. And people saying "Go back to school" like people aren't taught differently in different parts of the world.
For most of the rest of the world Australia is the country only, and Oceania is the region/continent. It includes New Zealand, Papua and all those other tiny islands

Americans can be very arrogant when it comes to the way they were taught geography (aka they think they're the only ones right). A bit ironic
