The comparison is there because of the big voice. The thing is though, Adele is promoting herself as having a big voice. What is Hello, All I Ask and Sweetest Devotion (vocally) - as well as When We Were Young? Big voiced songs. All I Ask is very One Moment In Time-ish in the way it builds and goes off vocally.
Race does have a part to play in a lot of artist's success. You can't tell me we live in a society which favours people of lighter skin and low-key ignores/sidelines darker skinned people and that won't be seen in the arts? Chile bye.
Adele is to be commended as she's very talented, but let's keep it all the way real. The last black woman vocalist to have this much attention on her for pure vocals was Whitney, and she's interchangeably the best of all time with Aretha. Remember that.
I think Adele is very talented, but I've seen singers like her (vocally) before (some at Church as a kid, some as I got older in modern music), so I can properly critique. The vast majority of the public haven't, which does help a lot. Music is all about perception - it's a reason there's a whole industry about 'the look' and 'what's hot right now'. She's perceived to be the best.
