This is 100% true. Rihanna is a pop star yet the Grammy committee keep forcing us to believe she's RNB simply because of he r skin color. It's borderline racist.
She was nominated on an Urban category. What IS you talking about?
It's SO boring to dictate what an genre is and it's limitations. I mean, there is a reason why grammy differentiate the traditional from the contemporary kind of RNB. Contemporary should mean a revision with elements from a more youthful culture. The 90's/early 00's sound was one thing, now is another, there is no need to keep thing the same way forever. So yeah, if your album isn't filled with mid/slow-tempo songs and you are not singing like the g3rls from the church is NOT rnb, all right.
Beyonce is not true RnB to me. She is more RnB/Pop like michael and Janet were they used a lot of funk and rnb undertones but they were geared and molded to be Pop Stars.
Just like pink and Katy are rock/pop
Britney and Madonna are Dance/pop
Taylor Swift is country/pop
Rihanna and Beyonce are a blended pop too. Its not 100 percent pure rnb like someone as say Lauryn hill, or mary j ***** or keyshia cole or Monica or brandy etc etc
She's still salty that Rihanna won for best Urban Contemporary Album grammy. They have a separate category for Best R&B album. Maybe if she can differentiate and submit her new album in the latter category.
Now, I would agree about the Sam Smith & Tyrese part. If someone like Tank sung "Stay With Me" it would have never been as big, top 40 radio wouldn't touch it.
