Grammys Preview: Who Will The Post-Grammys Sales Winners Be?
January 29, 2010 - Retail
By Ed Christman, N.Y.
The Grammy Awards provide a major sales boost to a handful of artists each year and the big winners can typically expect five to eight weeks of heightened sales after the show’s broadcast.
The artists who benefit the most? It’s always mix of award winners and performers, but the real winners tend to be those just under-the-radar of the mainstream who are poised for an introduction to a larger audience, or established acts whose current albums have not garnered widespread attention. With that in mind, who will be the big winners this year? Billboard polled industry experts, bantered the most likely scenarios and made our own top picks:
Lady Antebellum
Lady Antebellum most recently won a pair of Country Music Association Awards for vocal group of the year and single of the year ("I Run to You") and it's rolling into this weekend's Grammy Awards with two nominations - best country song and best country performance by duo or group with vocals, both also for "I Run to You." The trio's profile continues to rise and the performance on Sunday's telecast will open the country band to an even wider audience. Their self-titled album is moving 25,000 units per week leading up to the Grammys, but after the band's performance expect sales to spike to 70,000 the following week. The week after? Another 50,000 scans.
Zac Brown Band
The Atlanta-based country outfit Zac Brown Band broke out in a big way last year with a No. 1 country song ("Toes") and two more singles -- "Chicken Fried" and "Whatever It Is" -- reaching No. 2. Their "Foundation" album, which has scanned 1.5 million units to date since its November 2008 release, is now knocking off scans in the range of 17,000 a week. Like Lady Antebellum, the Zac Brown Band will be introduced to a much wider audience - they're up for three awards and will perform - thanks to the Grammys. Expect this album to jump up to 50,000 units the week after the show.
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson’s "This Is it" album, which has scanned 1.3 million units since its Oct. 27 release, is now hovering at a healthy 20,000 units range. The Grammys tribute to Jackson and the 3-D performance that's planned - a mini movie of the artist performing "Earth Song" from his "HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I" album will be run during the show - will send sales soaring. "This Is It" sales will rise to the 100,000 mark in the week after the show's broadcast, Billboard predicts. And expect sales of "Earth Song," the only song known to be played during the broadcast at this point, to spike to some point between 100,000 and 200,000 units in the week after the Jan. 31 Grammy broadcast. According to Nielsen SoundScan the song has 90,000 scans now.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift's "Fearless" has yet to run out of steam despite being released in November of 2008. It was the top-selling album of 2009 and has tallied 5.4 million to date. Swift received Grammy nominations in the top three categories: album of the year for "Fearless," and record of the year and song of the year, alongside co-writer Liz Rose, for "You Belong With Me" en route to a total of eight nominations. And even though the artist, who was named Billboard's female artist of the year in 2009, enjoys widespread exposure, Grammy wins will keep the juggernaut going. As it is, "Fearless" was selling at about 35,000 units prior to the show. Expect that number to jump to 65,000 units after the broadcast.
The Big Winner: Lady Gaga
Expect Lady Gaga sales to run wild as the never-a-dull moment, can't-take-your eyes-off-what-she's wearing artist continues to break down audience barriers and grabs hold of new fans, who learn she is more than just a bizarre dress. The artist, who now counts the music cognoscenti among her growing fanbase, should enjoy another rash of sales. She's up for five Grammys and will perform with Elton John to kick off the telecast. And she has already sold more than 3 million units. Her "Fame" album and the deluxe edition issued for the 2009 holiday selling season have combined for more than 2.5 million scans, and “Fame Monster,” an eight-track slice of the deluxe version of "Fame," has scanned 637,000 units.
Post Grammys, look for "Fame" to grow to sales of 150,000 for the week following the broadcast from its current level of about 65,000 units. Billboard expects the two versions of "Fame" to sell an extra 250,000 units during the five to eight weeks after the show's broadcast. "Fame Monster," which is currently selling about 34,00 units a week, should jump 75,000 units the week after the show and overall pick up an incremental 150,000 units. Combined, expect Lady Gaga to move an additional 400,000 units based on the Grammys.

I wonder how Billboard was able to make those predictions though.
I mean surely an artists sales boost depends on an their wins/losses so how can we already know.
Do Billboard know something we don't?

Well thats usually true but I think Billboard are saying that even if she doesnt win anything, her performance alone will boost her sales!
