I've said nothing about these topics. Fools on here just claim I'm something I'm not since I happen to stan for Iggy. So take that smug attitude somewhere else.
I'm agreeing with you (partially), but telling a reasonable mod to 'take that smug attitude somewhere else' probably isn't going to get you far
There's a fine line between inspiration and appropriation, and even more so of whether it's done maliciously verses genuinely.
We live in SUCH a connected society, you cannot say "I make this art. You make that art " You're completely missing the point of the whole thing. That isn't how popular culture has worked, will work, or will EVER work.
The problem is how to tell the difference, and doing so consciously and not just crying wolf at literally everything you possibly can. That's not a safe place for artists of any walk of life.
Out of the people she mentioned, Taylor Swift is easily the most guilty of cultural appropriation. Shake It Off MV is disgusting. What was she thinking?
I just agreed with you, so I don't get what you're saying, white racism in America is a completely stupid idea and I'm not defending it at all
Yes, but 'acting black' isn't a racist act in itself. If they were doing it to demean them then sure (so probably Miley and to a lessor extent Taylor) then that's a bit sketchy but there are worse things they can do, however the Katy TIHWD one is stupid because I didn't connect that hairstyle/watermelon thing until someone pointed it out. She probably just liked the hair, and the watermelon was just a colourful fruit used in a colourful video
So did I
The concept of "acting *insert cultural minority*" IS based on (or creates) the harmful stereotypes and this is what C.A. is about. And one of the problems is that these white girls get away with doing this kind of stuff (and to some extent get more famous / popular / sell more etc.) or even get praised (when Kylie Jenner's dreads were "fashionable" while dreads on a black person make them look dirty or something (infamous stereotype))
This makes me so sad to read this and just further proves we truly aren't ready to talk about race yet. By succumbing to the white supremacist society we live in today, you are AGREEING to the oppression you and all people of color will continue to face in every facet of life.
1. I have yet to face racism from any ethnicity and even if i did, I would blame the racist, not his entire ethnicity like some of are doing. Example: A guy calls me a spic, instead of saying I hate white people like I know a lot of you people are doing, I would say I hate that person. His race is irrelevant to me.
2. Its completely valid to talk about police brutality and racism present in the stop and frisk laws as well as racial profiling but this whole "twerking is apart of black culture so you cant do it " argument is stupid. Saying people cant wear certain hairstyles, perform music genres or dance a certain way is ridiculous and the fact that people put so much energy into policing these things makes real racist issues seem trivial. People need to focus on real racial issues, not whether or not some white girl is twerking or wearing dreadlocks
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't really agree with that statement because it's easy to take on cultural aspects like the hair, but it's impossible for us to know the oppression part, and thus we can't be expected to 'take it on' as well.
On another point, surely 'cultural appropriation' is a sign of cultures being integrated? I mean, the racists like Nigel Farage would never 'act black' (which is a stupid phrase but still). Surely cultural boundaries being broken down should be seen as a good thing, no?
And that's exactly why appropriation is a thing. Like the text says, "Whites have a strong, long-standing interest in consuming aspects of black culture. There is, for example, a lengthy history of white interest in jazz, much of which comes from the black community." The same goes for rock music. The blues as well. All three genres of music were founded from the voices of oppressed black people. White people found it "easy" to take on their music, leaving the Blacks with nothing but their oppression. Whites didn't care about their oppression. The result? White people are the faces of rock, jazz, and the blues. Black people can't even jam to rock music without being given a side eye. Black people walk into jazz clubs and are still the minority in the room. That's cultural appropriation. That's cultural smudging. That's exactly what we're talking about.
And if we follow the logic of your second post, then are you trying to tell me that there's nothing wrong with blackface? This man right here is "breaking down cultural boundaries"?
She says white people wearing braids is cultural appropriation. She says this while wearing straightened hair in imitation of white womens hair styles. She is also wearing red lipstick which was created by the Asian culture in the Indus Valley. She is also saying this in English, a language created by a Germanic tribe called the Angles. Her profession is an actress, which is an art-form created by the Greeks. The role of Rue was from a book which was became popular based on printing-press technology created by the Chinese. Girl need to stop appropriating culture. It is so offensive. Hitler didn't like it either.
Obviously we should all live in a world where everyone only uses the things that people from the exact same background invented, else cultural appropriation which is taboo. Sucks for those who want to use things like phones, tvs, internet, cars. You have to stop using these things unless you are related to their inventors.
You see, that's kinda racist right there, if you wanna be taken seriously then make an actual point rather than insulting people who disagree with you
I'm not going to participate in this since for the longest Doc. has had a personal vendetta against me.
ot:
People need to get over this. Mainstream black culture isn't as significant or important as, for example, traditional Asian/Indian culture that hold ancestry meanings.

Are we in aggreeance on this then, because I don't want you to think I'm stupid
I mean I guess you could see it that way, but you could also view it as the stigma being normalised across all races and no longer attributed to just one. And do people really think that about dreadlocks? I always just think that they're super cool, and I've never seen/heard anyone act like they're dirty on blacks, or any race for that matter

Or we can all grow up and live in the real world.
clock it!! cultural appropriation is so damn silly. such a backward thinking that will only lead to more segregation.
People need to focus on real racial issues, not whether or not some white girl is twerking or wearing dreadlocks
This is where you're wrong.
That type of thinking is the very reason why racism didn't end when slavery ended.
That type of thinking is the very reason why racism didn't end when the Civil Rights Movement ended.
That type of thinking is the very reason why racism still exists today.
And that's exactly why appropriation is a thing. Like the text says, "Whites have a strong, long-standing interest in consuming aspects of black culture. I mean sis
Wait, this makes sense. You're the first person to explain why it's wrong to me, so slay. I always presumed that the minority would be assimilated into it, so I guess it'd be kinda hard to have that taken from you and still be discriminated against. It'd be like your enemies all sitting at your table at lunch.
Surely you could say that it isn't that bad nowadays though? If the problem before was that their culture was being taken and they were being excluded from it, such as them not being allowed to be in the rock community for example, surely it's not that bad now because, for example, Taylor is accepting of all blacks and isn't being discriminatory against them? To me, that's the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural disintegration.
And blackface is not the same as twerking, I mean really now

Sounds like you need to take a sociology course.
You'll enjoy the Globalization chapter, but you'll be thrown for a tizzy when you get to the Race and Ethnicity chapter.
But the thing that it's not normalised! For example, black women are being strereityped as sl**ty and ratchet and stupid significantly because of ca and I've read that twerk actually is a traditional African dance and now it's being sexualised and seems controversial because of like Miley Cyrus and other girls... and it's good of you if you think that way, but a lot of people find dreadlocks "cool and creative" when these are on a white person while black person with dreads is automatically "hood" and "ghetto"
We can't have inheritance of cultural minorities being normalised while racism is still alive and well cause it wouldn't bring any equality but white people would just benefit from it once again. And this is what we see now exactly.
