Diatomic elements are molecules that specifically use two atoms of the same kind to exist, I believe there are only 7 of them.
As a covalent compound it could never make sense because we'd have to use the word "dioxide".
And let's not get into complex ions, the names of those are 30+ letters long. American Oxygen would never make sense.

I mean, if we're trying to make "American Oxygen", you're never gonna get that, because you're gonna have American Oxide or American Dioxide or American Peroxide or American Superoxide or whatever. I was just speculating at AO2 possibilities
But, no, they're called diatomic molecules...An element is talking about a single atomic nucleus, never more than that. And yeah, there are 7 of them (H2, O2, N2, and the first four halogens, IIRC).
