Alternative/Modern Rock: Alternative/Indie-leaning Rock, while having hard rock mixed in.
One station could play Coldplay, Muse, and U2, etc.; while another can focus on Disturbed, Rise Against, Slipknot, etc.
Active Rock: Harder than Alternative and AAA, Hard Rock/Metal Tracks are common here.
Mainstream Rock: Almost the same as Active. Smaller than Active/Modern Rock.
The 3 rock formats all have bands common: Linkin Park, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Korn, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Tool, Pearl Jam, etc...
AAA: Primarily Alt-Rock/Indie-leaning, occasional Pop song or 2. The most diverse (w/o rap) format on radio. More emphasis on substance and songwriting than style.
HAC: Varies significantly by station. One could be AAA-leaning, one could be Alt/Rock-leaning, one could be CHR-leaning, one could be MOR/Pure HAC [like KYKY is] and so on. It is basically CHR minus Rap/Hip-Hop, save for the occasional Rhythmic song or 2.
