While the song doesn't emphatically tell the story of her relationship/incident with Chris Brown, it does seem to allude to it. The song is about a man and a woman playing a dangerous game with only on survivor. She knows she doesn't want to do it but somehow is compelled to.
With lyrics like
Said I'm terrified but I'm not leaving
Know that I must pass this test.
So, just pull my trigger
or
As my life flashes before my eyes
I'm wondering will I ever see another sunrise?
So many won't get the chance to say good-bye
But its too late to think of the value of my life
that both draw to mind the incident, as well as her return to Chris Brown after it all as something that she knows isn't a good decision but feels compelled to do.
I agree that the girl who released S.O.S., Pon de Replay and Umbrella wasn't expected to release something like this. But she was not that girl anymore and the release of this album was met with interviews about the incident and this dark song that talks about violence, self-destruction and a toxic relationship.
