Originally Madonna and Orbit had recorded 14 tracks for the album. However Madonna insisted only 13 tracks would appear on the album, because that's a lucky number.

Description/Review:

This is her freedom fighter / feminist anthem. This is not a b side or an unreleased song, but I do think it's underrated and not anywhere near as known as it deserves to be.

I think the original acoustic demo comes from 2004/5 off the sessions of COADF. But some say it comes from 2007 (Hard Candy Sessions)



It was reworked as a dance track for 'Celebration'.



Then it was scrapped off 'Celebration' and given as a limited edition 12"

Since no one else is going to comment on the supposedly underrated Human Nature, let me post the flawless MDNA tour Performance. In my opinion the best one so far along with Drowed World. S&S was awful and Britney didn't help it.

Additional Information:

"If You Go Away" is actually a cover from a 1966 song which was also a translated adaption of the French song "Ne Me Quitte Pas" released by Jacques Brel already in 1959.
Madonna recorded a version of the song in 2004 as one of the songs for "Hello Suckers", Madonna’s musical that never was made. Producers of the musical were Patrick Leonard and Mirwais Ahmadzaï. "Hello Suckers", was supposed to be a 20s-style musical loosely based on the life of Texas Guinan. Other well known Madonna songs were meant to be part of it: "How High", later reworked for Confessions on a Dance Floor and "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" from Hard Candy.

Guilty by Association is alright. A nice duet between her and her brother-in-law, with decent lyrics and nice vocals from Madonna. But honestly that's really it, nothing really special in my opinion. Their other collabs that I've heard are much better

I remember stumbling upon History (Land of the Free) while searching for my song choices for this event. I didn't chose it myself, but this song is a BOP with some insightful lyrics It's really interesting to learn that Warner Brother cut the track from COAD due to it's politically-charged theme. I honestly believe it wouldn't have hurt the album's success too much because most of the album wasn't politically-charged, unlike American Life. Oh well, Warner Brother dropped the ball in this situation The original is still better than that remix, but that kaleidoscope Madonna video for the remix is cool as ****

Has to Be would've fit perfectly at the end of Ray of Light with songs like Mer Girl, Little Star, and To Have and Not to Hold. I mean.. I know 13 is her lucky number, but she couldn't just let that go and add one more track to the US album US fans deserved to hear this track. The lyrics are great (I can relate ), and I just love the overall vibe of it

I like the praise for Human Nature, but that track is not underrated at all It does happen to be one of my favorite Madonna songs and videos, so I ain't even mad at it being here That performance looks pretty good, but not a fan of that shoddy camera work And when you said S&S and Britney in the same sentence, for some reason I thought you were talking about Scream & Shout Didn't realize it was the Sticky & Sweet tour until like the 3rd time reading it

Not much of a fan of If You Go Away. She sounds great, but it's kind of a bore for me. Interesting to know it was for a Madonna musical that I never knew about... Glad it didn't make any albums though The most interesting thing about the background of this musical is the conception of Devil Wouldn't Recognize You all the way back in 2004... Love that song, and it is easily one of the best tracks on Hard Candy

I like this one better from 'Hello Suckers', the original version of 'Voices', not the melody or the (non-existent) production, but the lyrics.

I was in a 'relationship' with a 'straight guy' who slept with me all the time but 'was not gay', it was on and off, he would surrender to me (to love) lol and then he would not speak to me for a while since he was not gay and then come back, etc..

So the lyrics made much sense for me, at the time:

Has to Be is amazing, both the lyrical content and the instrumental, BTW Mirwais leaked an album of the Ray Of Light instrumentals with extended versions and all, it's haunting and brilliant, look it up

About Human Nature, I love these quotes from Avidiva who was at the set of the video:

It was Mondino who later introduced me to Madonna on the set of the HUMAN NATURE video. I remember we all waited for her to walk out onto set to begin shooting in that amazing tight black leather outfit… as she stepped onto that soundstage in Hollywood off Melrose with gal pal Ingrid at her side, Madonna strutting in her boots, stepping over cables and wires to reach the white set… EVERYONE SILENCED… about 45 crew-members and producers went silent- just staring and watching her walk.



It was one of the coolest moments in my life that I will NEVER forget. She took my breath away- for me… it was like, MADONNA… FINALLY!

On that shoot I remember sneaking Hot Tamales into her bowl of snacks. She immediately snatched them up to nibble.

I laughed at that with the producer on set who didn’t believe me when I told her that I knew Madonna’s favourite snack. But sure enough, that was all we saw her eat all day after that.

On the set of HUMAN NATURE Madonna joked LOUDLY with MONDINO… “You’d better be nice to me or else I’ll call MATTHEW ROLSTON! (another director she later worked with and had already been photographed by- it was an inside joke)… NOT!” Madonna dissed Matthew for everyone to hear.

Her brash over-zealous stage presence- especially on video shoots, is super cool to watch. She gets in DIVA mode because that’s how she ‘gets through it’- or used to anyway… and I loved it!
