Janet is more successful, overall, but Rihanna is more successful for her age. when you consider she's only 25 and has only been in the industry for 8 years, she's done more than Janet did in her first eight years. Janet is 46 with 30+ years in the game, she had far more time to actually achieve more. If you look at where Janet was at her 8-year mark, 'Rhythm Nation' was JUST released.
Of course Janet is going to have better album sales, because she comes from an era were albums were selling like crazy. arguing that point is useless. Just like Rihanna has easily sold more singles. Rihanna has more Grammys, more No.1 singles, and when all is said and done, will probably beat out Janet is most areas (except for Janet's respect as a performer and probably album sales), but yeah.
I love both of them!

I love both aswell. It's nice to see Rihanna fans showing respect for Janet and aren't delusional. Unlike other certain fanbases on here.

Yet, she's about to be out-sold by both of them .

I love Madonna and whatnot, but her discography is (sadly) forgotten.
Beatles is also forgotten as well.
Elvis has some memorable hits, but no one remembers the Beatles or Madonna's discography. Go up to any given person and name a song by either or(or both), and I guarantee you they won't know the song.

Why do people compare album sales? This comparison fails. There's no way to know if Janet debuted at the same time as Rihanna if she would be as successful as Rihanna is now, or if Rihanna debuted at Janet's time and vice versa.
What could be noted is that both of them are successful artists that left a mark on the industry.

Different times, yes, but you have to note that:
Janet:
- can actually sell albums and singles simultaneously
Rihanna:
- can only sell singles
even in this day and age where single sales have more emphasis, Rihanna's discography sales are the epitome of mediocre. Barely making the 20 million mark with 7 albums for someone who's proclaimed as "the Black Madonna" Without her back-to-back singles, Rihanna would be nothing. Janet alone off of her album sales is still a more successful artist than Rihanna was and is right now.

Janet knew how make her album eras last long,3-4 years long to be exact. Which lead her sales to be big at the end result.

You cannot compare a legend with currently the most popular artist Rihanna's not a legend (yet) whilst Janet is one of the greatest artist ever (and I'm not even fan of hers)

It's being realistic. Test my theory in real life, and my answers here will be the same.
No one remembers Madonna's nor The Beatles' discography. Whether it's still memorable in the music industry is irrelevant - I'm talking about real life, not the music industry.
Not one song from any of their discographies are instant, memorable tunes.

The iconic one - Rihanna.
Janet's career has been erased from history.

You honestly don't think people would remember Like A Virgin, Holiday, Material Girl, Like A Prayer, Vogue, Hey Jude, Twist and Shout, Yesterday And Let It Be?

This. there was a clip where they ask footballers if they knew any Madonna song and most of them came up with Vogue, Like a virgin and even Holiday I think, and we know that's not Madonna's demography.
Oh and I knew The Beatles music when I was a kid, way before I was interested in English music.

Janet Jackson of course
You can vote for Rihanna if you want to seem pretentious though.

janet. - 20M WW
The Velvet Rope - 10M WW

Girl, those The Velvet Rope WW sales are hugely inflated. It barely crossed three million in the states
