If anything, religion makes the world more peaceful since it always brings up the ideals of respect, love of neighbor, etc.
Also, we wouldn't even exist if in the past there wasn't anything that people would be afraid of. A GOD was and still is essential to control the population.

What kind of lies, no it did not at all. People have done so much atrocities from treating women like second class citizens, condoning violence and murder etc... In the name of religion. Not everyone who follows religion are decent people, like the numerous crooked pastors, bigoted/uneducated people who follow religion blindly. We would have existed and done fine if religion wasn't invented, we had no knowledge like we do today, it was used to explain the unknown basically.

The teacher is a complete moron. The student should have wrote the teachers name on the piece of paper and stomped on that instead.

"Witches" burned alive.
Books of huge scientific knowledge burned.
Galileo being treated like ****, among many other brilliant minds we owe so much today.
Gays being repressed.
Uncontrolled HIV-spread in Africa.
ALL in the name of religion, because of religion.
So get your facts straight, educate yourself and don't embarrass yourself.

And yes, God is a myth created a long time ago in order to give people something to be afraid of. There were no laws or government back then, therefore their fear of God and going to hell made them behave well.
I'm not sure how you can say that God is essential nowadays to control the population, when statistics prove that countries with the highest atheist population are the most peaceful and generally happy countries in the world and most countries with high religious population are the exact opposite.
|
Not exactly.
In less affluent countries, religious people are happier than atheists, whereas non-religious people are more stressed and violent. (I can't find the source of the research now, but I believe it is from some EUA university). Faith IS a important way to have a great life quality.
If you mean social equality or something about the economy of these "best" countries to live in, I don't believe it directly has something to do with religion.

Nothing you said has anything to back it up, so I'll take that as you've got nothing to back it up with.
The fact is, atrocities happen in the name of religion. If religion was abolished for one day, and the world had no memory of religion, it would be a damn happier place.

Just because you don't physically perceive Him or feel Him work in your life doesn't mean He's not real. The origin of the universe, the perfect laws of the cosmos that hold everything in place, the wonder of life and its complexities, the limitation of man's knowledge to extend life, and all the inexplicable mysteries of life, world, universe and beyond, all points out to one supreme intelligent Creator who caused all things and events come to be. God's presence is manifested all around us. There are just some people who are too blind not to see them.

So it came from the actual coursework and the teacher didn't actually make it up?

I could say the same about non-religious people...
People always use these same arguments "they killed people in name of religion" "they hindered the progress of science", well it may be true, but let's not forget that religion is a form of knowledge too, (however, I don't like the dogmas of the church ([I'm what some people call "atheist"]), the Jesuits are responsible for educate the natives of Portuguese America.
The initial understanding of natural phenomena arising from ancient polytheistic religions was important to develop the scientific study, maybe our knowledge today would haven't been the same without the contribution of the myth.

I bet you don't live in an underdeveloped country, without religion we would be DOOMED.
Whatever you think, I guess...

From what I have read in this thread, people believe that people would no longer have any feelings of guilt, sympathy, compassion, or even a conscience if religion didn't exist? Says a lot about humans.

As long as religion dominates your country, you'll stay underdeveloped.
I know that - lived in one long ago.

No. If religion didn't exist, there wouldn't be violence, envy, greed, social inequality or any problem, even death would no longer exist.
RELIGION IS THE PROBLEM OF THE HUMANITY!!1!!1111!

I respect your right to have that opinion, but I personally disagree. You are being a little rude to those who don't have the same opinions as you. I'm not blind, I just don't tend to see things that aren't there.

Haha yes, because religion is doing so much to save lives in underdeveloped countries. It is the power of prayer that saves starving children's lives, not food or water.

I was going to say basically the same thing as Miichael, but he beat me there. Just because you and I have different beliefs, such as that over whether anything point to a supreme being, does not mean that either of us is "blind". It is your right to believe what you feel is right, but mine is the same right. It should be fully respected both ways.

Wait.... so now its a debate whether or not non-religious countries are happier or not?
Honestly bible thumpers need to go, nothing wrong with having a religion but thats just my two cents
