Discussion: Has Rihanna become THE pop star of our generation?

The only thing she has going for her over the other pop women are looks (arguably), her #1s record and a shitload of digital sales. Well done for someone her age with back to back albums in such a short time. In the grand scheme of things, no. This generation is not over yet and there's still pop stars just as big as her in other ways, if not bigger and not to mention a whole slew of artists to debut in the forthcoming years. She's definitely one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now but again, a generation is typically between 22-25 years.... do the math.

Yes. She just dethroned gaga awhile ago after having a ballad reach #1 on itunes over a boring grammy performance.

Between her Gaga, and there's no point in debating it when everyone will pick 1 or the other.

If the industry was high school she'd be Regina George

No one can deny Rihanna as one of the biggest pop stars right now, but there's something about GaGa that Rih lacks .. not sure what it is but GaGa is really someone people will think first when it comes to these titles. She hasnt released music for like 2 years yet people and the media still cling to her. I bet if Rihanna takes a break like GaGa, it's much harder for her to comeback. Mark my words ARTPOP's first single will only top iTunes in no time and debut @ #1 on Hot 100 and continue staying there for several weeks and ARTPOP will open with over 500,000 units in its first week.

Yes, I think. Rihanna's star is really shining bright, and she has been really consistent.

Yes, for sure. She is a beautiful and very wide appealing pop star. I think her credibility as an artist is increasing. The public are really starting to take her more seriously. She isn't a typical pop clown dying for attention. Rihanna has close to the whole package, pretty much.

Her and Katy are THE radio artists of our generation, and nothing more. Outside the radio they have minimal impact.
Basically, they're label installations placed in the industry to generate radio music.

She will definitely be one of the few defining popstars when it is all said and done, but she is not the defining popstar. If we looks at defining popstars of the past, they all have a few things in common: impact, fanbase, and often times critical acclaim. Rihanna does not have a big fanbase or impact. There are other popstars who have dedicated fanbases and have accomplished more in half the time.

Is this the same Rihanna who can't push an album past platinum, and takes a year to do that? For her to have as much reverence as some people want to believe, her numbers would need to increase dramatically. Unlike people like Whitney, Mariah, Janet and Madonna...Rihanna has never sat atop of the music world and had that moment where she noticeably outshines the rest. There's always someone else out at the same time who is doing better than her at the moment. Rihanna is just sneakily consistent, and continues to operate like a new artist; pumping out new albums every Xmas shopping season, which allows her to stay on peoples tongues. A mere two year hiatus would end her career. Radio, the general public and even most of her fans would move on from her very easily and quickly if she ever decided to take a break -- as opposed to it creating frantic anticipation, like other artists. Ultimately Rihanna is just the product of a budgeted, yet oddly savvy, machine that knows how to manipulate the system to keep her afloat and to make it look like she's bigger than she is.

She could most def become the pop girl of this generation. She and gaga are kind of in the same boat. Gaga gets more media attention, but that's about it. Album sales wise rih does better than most and is consistent. Also gaga never really took a Break, being on tour is not a breAk, it's being on tour,, beyonce never really took a break either. She went Back to destinys child, filmed movies, and went on tours. The only break she really ever took was after IAsf and after 4. So rih really doing the same thing as them just in a more obvious way.
Rih ha been the it girl since umbrella and never has let go of the fame and attention she has. Gaga gets way more flack now because though she is uber creative, we expect it from her and its not as exciting. Rihanna very much like madonna keeps you guessing. So she is basically is pushing all the right buttons to stay on her throne, because plenty of people thought rated r was her fall and she would not ever recover.
