I haven't watched 'The Color Purple' yet. Is it one of those Segregation/Slavery films? I tend to stay away from those, esp after i saw the AWFUL one starring Alicia Keys. I think it was called 'The Secret Life Of Bees'.

The Color Purple is incredible. It's more so about sexism and patriarchy in the pre-1950's south and the last scene is probably one of the most iconic scenes in film history.
