OBVIOUSLY, I'm a Britney fan but I can't deny that at some point Avril was the "it" girl at that time and was more successful with her album sales and chart singles positions for "Let Go." However, we are comparing this to "Britney", Britney's third album. They were constantly being pitted against one another as Avril was being marketed as the "anti-Britney" even though she could've easily been compared to Michelle Branch or Vanessa Carlton who were singer/songwriters the same as her. That speaks volumes. However this only lasted for a very short time.
Christina hasn't received any love for her solo work since Candyman. The soundtrack nomination was coming from a very weak field, and she rode off M5 and Tony Bennet for her recent ones. The fact that "You Lost Me" didn't get any nomination says it all. Her REAL eras (Bionic and so far Lotus) are Grammy duds.
The Grammys decided to snub Avril so blatantly for whatever reason, who knows really. But her debut's cultural impact was more important than Christina ever had her whole career.

Even if Avril was the It Girl, that doesn't mean she passed Britney in impact. Last year Katy Perry was the It Girl over Lady Gaga, but in no way did Katy Perry ever pass Lady Gaga in impact
How were they constantly pitted against each other? Britney didn't even have anything out when Avril came out. Britney has only had one true "Anti-Britney" and that was Christina.
How was the soundtrack field weak? There wasn't anything unusual about that year
And Grammys don't nominate unsuccessful songs when it comes to pop music. That's the way it is with anyone, not just Christina. So there is nothing telling about that.
Lotus wasn't released in time for nominations. So out of 4 albums, 3 have been nominated. Avril has had 5 albums, and only 2 have been nominated. That's a worst percentage. And like I said Christina has won 5 awards, Avril 0. So thats an even worse percentage
Avril's cultural relevance lies in Complicated. And Beautiful has had more impact than Complicated overall
