i don't see why rihanna (or mariah) can't eventually beat the beatles...i mean don't get me wrong they are legendary but if you look at the # of albums they released in a 10 year span and singles they rly put rihanna to shame in terms of quantity (then again, totally different times)
Yes. I mean isn't rihanna releasing an album later this year? Maybe she just loves music? Prince released albums every year BUT he arranged/played instruments and wrote his own music.
I think rihanna will surpass Mariah, rihanna is only 24, people love her music.
Everything is possible. However, it is going to be heartbreaking for a Lamb like me seeing somebody like Rihanna surpassing Mariah's record. No disrespect but if Rihanna reflects what kind of generation we have today, heck, I am ready to go to heaven and see Mariah preach the Bible a la "I Wish You Well".
Going back, it isn't the 90s anymore where true divas with really gifted vocals climb the peak of the Billboard Hot 100 or 200. We are in the new age - new kind of music. Well, Adele was a different case. I was amazed about the things that happened to her. It was a rare event. So for another vocalist that sings ballad to be on the top of the chart is probably like once in a blue moon.
As for Mariah, I am fan, but somehow I like the Mariah in the 90s. I keep on looking back. It's been 7 years when We Belong Together captured the hearts of the Americans because it was truly a very emotional song and it was really arranged and made very simple yet it really strikes hard because everyone knew the how it feels to be heartbroken. And Mariah had tried hard to use that formula in song like "Stay In Love" and "Thanx 4 Nothin'". Touch My Body climbed at #1 because it was really naughty and catchy and probably it was brought by the aftershock of her "comeback" album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
So, I really don't know if the kind of material she'll be releasing would be another phenomenon like "Emancipation". Christina had her "Glitter" era with "Bionic" and I guess she'll be eagerly planning some vengeance with her new album. Probably, she's pegging herself like Mariah in 2005 right now because she's, in the first place, a Mariah Carey fan and she's hungry for a comeback, too. However, like I said, she's a true diva vocalist, and her roots are like Mariah's - songs filled with vocal acrobatics that nobody can sing along with. Most of the people right now just plainly like sing-songs, party, dance, auto-tuned, etc like Ke$ha. Britney did that and she's been really up there. Xtina did that in Bionic and even her "Not Myself Tonight" sounded like a track from Blackout. However, Xtina's effort did not work because vocally songs still has that "soaring high" diva stuff and probably everybody's accusing her of copying Miss Poker Face.
So, going back to Mimi. Again everything is possible. But it will definitely hurt seeing Rihanna kill that record. Well, I can accept if Katy's gonna be able to do the slaying. She did it with The King of Pop. Why not go up there and beat only The Queen of The Charts. But please do it gently. YOU ALL CAME FROM MARIAH CAREY!!!!!
I think Rihanna has the potential to if the label she maintains the drive and releases an album every year. Yes, she'll be over-exposed but with each new release is another attempt of getting that #1 spot either single or album-wise.
It'll be quite upsetting though as writing + producing your own stuff takes significantly more time than just a quickie visit to the recording studio.
You guys seem to think it's easy to continually rack up no 1 hits. It's not, and RiRi is arguably past her commercial peak.
She just had her biggest hit EVER last year
YDO peak at #14 and got platinum status with only a video
BC reached #1 on urban chart with the song not being available on youtube
TTT reached #31 with no promo&no video
WHYB is currently doing well giving her 22nd top 10
She hasnt reached her "commercial peak' yet she still selling&selling well
Nice try tho
