It's called PROMOTION. It's no difference to the artists that do lots of live performances to get the songs to #1.
I do prefer J-Lo's remixes though, since they're more different to the original. I don't like it much when remixes are almost the same as the original.
Katy does some good remixes occasionally though. I liked the Almighty remix to Last Friday Night (it's basically Last Friday Night over the instrumental to Only Girl).

I just think that as an artist, if you're going to make a remix for additional commercial success, you need to make it worth my while. Katy is lazy with her remixes, and makes it obvious that she just wants to beat the MJ record.
J.Lo's remix of I'm Real, on the other hand, was classified by Billboard as an entirely different song from the original.
