It doesn't matter. Go out into the real world and ask people if "Boyfriend" is an R&B song, and they would laugh at you.
This isn't any different than when Gwen, Nelly Furtado and other pop singers crossed over to that format. They weren't R&B artists, and neither are Justin.

I've never, ever said Justin Bieber is an RnB artist?
If Justin Bieber sang Burn, it would still be an RnB song, right? Or would you call it a pop song because Justin is singing it?
You base genres of songs by the songs, not the artists. Starships is a dance-pop song. You don't say it's hip hop song because Nicki has it on her album.
People said to be Boyfriend crossed over to RnB only because it was a big hit. None of those other bigger hits crossed over to RnB, so that can't be the only reason by Boyfriend did.

"Burn" is an R&B song, so I would call it an R&B song no matter who sings it. As long as it has the same melody and production, it's an R&B song.
Look. I have nothing against you, but this shouldn't even be a thread. "Boyfriend" isn't bringing anything back. It's stalling at pop radio already, and it's an insult to say that type of song is "bringing R&B back." Do you think R&B music is mainly songs that sound like "Boyfriend"?
And besides, where are all the R&B songs smashing? No, Justin didn't bring back the genre as it is nearly nonexistent on the Hot 100 and pop radio right now. That's my answer.

It doesn't matter. Go out into the real world and ask people is "Boyfriend" an R&B song, and they would laugh at you. It's merely a pop song which has some elements of the genre, but it's not a full R&B song.

The bits in bold, THANK YOU!! That's what I've been trying to say.
And it was a few members during pages 1-3 that said Boyfriend only crossed over to urban because it was a big hit. To me, it clearly crossed over to urban because it has elements of RnB in it. Urban radio don't play all big hits. The only time they play pure pop songs is if they're really, really massive, or if it's a popular urban artist like Nicki Minaj or Chris Brown that release them.

Are you really comparing Burn to Boyfriend?

There you go. There are elements of the genre in the song, but it's not a full R&B song. And #59 on the R&B charts is not really "smashing" or indicative of a song being R&B. "Rolling in the Deep" peaked at #61 on the chart. Did Adele bring R&B back to mainstream? No.

No.
He said because Justin Bieber sings Boyfriend, it must be a pop song so I used Burn (first example that popped into my head), to ask him if a pop singer like Justin sang it if he would still consider it RnB.

So, why did urban radio play Rolling in the Deep? Because it was really, really massive, that's why. They played Poker Face and Party Rock Anthem aswell, for the same reason. Boyfriend hasn't been really, really massive like those songs. They're playing it because it's RnB influenced. End of.

What Cap10 (and everyone else) is trying to tell you, is that Boyfriend peaking at #59 on the Urban Charts doesn't equal the revival of an entire genre.
I mean, Just Dance charted at #72 on the Urban charts when it was released. Did GaGa 'bring back' R&B? No.
That's all.

Read my post above. Just Dance was really, really massive, that's why it got played on urban radio.
And ALSO, it has an urban remix that Interscope sent to urban, which boosted it more probably.

You keep using phrases such as "R&B influenced" and "elements of R&B," so you're just proving my point. Something with "elements" of something or that is "influenced" by something doesn't mean that it's bringing the genre back. Read what you're saying here. You're admitting that "Boyfriend" isn't an R&B song but a pop song with elements of the genre.
Either way, Justin sitting in the bottom half of the R&B charts is not unusual and is nothing too noteworthy. Nelly and Gwen actually charted higher.

Man, this is 2012. With the likes of Spotify and other streaming services are available. People prefer to look for new music on the internet rather than following the radio. Especially after more and more people know about the whole Clear Channel deal. Now, let's not pretend that Chart & Radio is as relevant as it used to.
*yes I'm being serious now*

But how do u know it charted on urban radio while it was already massive? Maybe it charted before it was massive.

I can't remember to be honest. Depends when Interscope sent them the remix to play.
Anyway, we've established:
- There have been hardly any RnB hits this year
- Boyfriend IS getting played on urban radio, despite Justin not being a credible urban artist
- Boyfriend has elements of RnB in it
That's basically all I wanted to say, and everybody agrees on those three points now, despite laughing at me at first.
My first post wasn't literally 100% serious! I thought that would've been obvious by my comment about I'm a Slave 4 U lol.

I'm 20.
That's why I miss RnB being popular and The Neptunes so much (and why I'm still bitter about I'm a Slave 4 U missing out on the top 10 lol). It was the soundtrack to my childhood.
I still listen to loads of new RnB music, but it gets hardly any public recognition compared to what it used to. It used to be so popular, playing at all the parties, playing in all the shops, on the radio all the time, always in the award shows. Now it's nowhere lol.
