Seriously, I'm not even here to go hard on Katy, but do you really think she's taken seriously enough to be considered one of the top 5 "greatest artists" right now by anyone outside of EW (if this list is even ranked, which I'm not sure it is). The internet is an open place, we all have access to metacritic.

Just look at how many Grammy nominations she has received. She was nominated for Album of the Year and Record of the Year. I think some people take her seriously enough, and it makes sense they would put her on there. She just tied Michael's record.

Here is what EW said about Gaga:
Quote:
NO. 24 LADY GAGA
Mother Monster
AGE 26 HOMETOWN New York City WHY WE LOVE HER The songs, the videos, the today-a-wombat-tomorrow-a-helicopter headgear---those are all great, but Gaga's most singular attribute is her willingness to let everything play out in public, which sometimes means alienating some listeners. "Once you start to get bigger," she told EW in 2009, "people around you don't know how to filter what you began as into something larger. It takes time, and it takes originality. It takes uncertainty and trusting in your gift. That's sort of my biggest achievement, and something that I really perceive as what will keep me around for a long time in the future." WHATS NEXT She's been lying relatively low, but if even half the rumors about the upcoming Born This Way Ball world tour are true, expect a fittingly bombastic return to form. ESSENTIAL TRACKS "Poker Face", "Bad Romance", "The Edge of Glory"

Just like BTW was nominated for AOTY because of the million first week, TD was nominated because of it's big singles. Pop artists are normally nominated for Grammys based on how popular they are. Like, they couldn't let Katy slide, nor could they let Gaga because of how successful they are.
Now winning... That's a different story. That shows who's taken seriously and who's not.

I honestly don't know if this was shade or not.
As for the rest, true, though conversely I could also say that Justin Bieber was nominated for best new artist. I don't take issue with her being on the list, but it's not hard to rationalize why a #5 ranking is a bit of a stretch. But hey EW, do you.

Okay, but that still doesn't change much of what I said. RIGHT NOW, Katy is one of the most successful artists, and she is taken seriously by some people. I don't know if I would have put her that high, but it's not shocking she ranked there.

I never said she had to be taken seriously amongst anybody, especially critics. Bieber gets hardly any radio support, everyone knows his fanbase is what keeps him relevant, he isn't very relevant consistently right now other than "Boyfriend" which was just released. "Greatest" can be interpreted differently, it's a very subjective word when used in this type of context. Even still, the cover doesn't match the list so I'm not even certain it's actually ranked.

Oh, I agree, but I don't think it's ranked. EW is quite anal about music and musicians, so I don't think they'd put some of those people so high.

The arrangement is a mess but I like most of the artists listed. Where is Lana though?

Once again, it's "Greatest", not "Relevant".
