learned the power of words when we was younger
saying **** the sign on his curb can make him hunt you
turned the african into a ***** then they hung him
said it earlier in the verse, sometimes i wonder
who the activist and who the devil's advocate
or do it matter? shit
3. Vince Staples - Prima Donna
Second straight Vince Staples EP composed of straight flames, but the first following breaking out in '15 with
Summatiiiime. This one actually functions as a quite solid companion to that album, just boasting the usually-beneficial quality of finishing up in one third of the time. We learn soon enough that rising fame + Pitchfork BNTs haven't changed our boy's view of the world, which is .. maybe sad for him? But just great for us because he remains one of rap's sharpest and most vital voices, no questions asked.
Swapping out the more gothic overtones of S'06 for some edgier production courtesy of James "Party Monster" Blake, No I.D. + more doesn't always make for an improvement per se, but when it's
on it is most definitely on, exhibits A through Z being mother****in War Ready's Andre 3Thou duet. Pimp hand skrong

2. Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered.
Among 2016's other highlights and low lights, this year sadly also saw the list of "rappers we want to hear every last studio scrap from" go waaay down. #facts. And while hopefully the GP's feedback means we see this trend fade in the new year, sparing us a pt. 2 – just please bb no more devils in the house – at least we quality fiends still have one real friend.
I stand by my position that TPAB was an uneven mess, but K.Dot won me back over with a lighter set of songs that didn't need to sacrifice any of his signature depth to stay easy, breezy beautiful. Still may not be on a first name basis with those song titles, but I will say it takes a well-rounded individual to engage in this kinda unreleased track fan service and have the end result be so cohesive it goes toe to toe with several of the year's best full-lengths.
