New York City is the most important city, but California is the most important state.
For big cities, all NY has is NYC. California has LA, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose, etc.
California is the most populated state and has the 6th largest economy in the world.
Education? CA occupies 4 of the top 10 universities in the world - Stanford #3, UC Berkeley #4, Cal Tech #5, UCLA #10 + USC and the rest of the UC system (the largest and most sophisticated public university system in the world). NY has Columbia #9, Cornell #22, and NYU #27.
California has Hollywood and Silicon Valley and gets the most tourists
Plus, the state is so geographically diverse, it's insane
There's a lot more I'm missing, but yeah, the only thing we don't have is water
