I don't support murderers, prison is no holiday camp. Murderers end up isolated and alone, all they have are their own thoughts. Locking them up is a greater punishment than death, death is the easy way out; hence why the perpetrators of the columbine high school massacre killed themselves, it was the same scenario in the UK this year, the man responsible for the Cumbria shootings killed himself. They want to die, living out their pitiful existence is greater punishment.

Should the death penalty be banned?...well let's look at both sides
Yes

Financial costs to taxpayers of capital punishment is several times that of keeping someone in prison for life.
It is barbaric and violates the "cruel and unusual" clause in the Bill of Rights.
The endless appeals and required additional procedures clog our court system.
We as a society have to move away from the "eye for an eye" revenge mentality if civilization is to advance.
It sends the wrong message: why kill people who kill people to show killing is wrong.
Life in prison is a worse punishment and a more effective deterrent.
Other countries (especially in Europe) would have a more favorable image of America.
Some jury members are reluctant to convict if it means putting someone to death.
The prisoner's family must suffer from seeing their loved one put to death by the state, as well as going through the emotionally-draining appeals process.
The possibility exists that innocent men and women may be put to death.
Mentally ill patients may be put to death.
It creates sympathy for the monstrous perpetrators of the crimes.
It is useless in that it doesn't bring the victim back to life.

The death penalty gives closure to the victim's families who have suffered so much.
It creates another form of crime deterrent.
Justice is better served.
Our justice system shows more sympathy for criminals than it does victims.
It provides a deterrent for prisoners already serving a life sentence.
DNA testing and other methods of modern crime scene science can now effectively eliminate almost all uncertainty as to a person's guilt or innocence.
Prisoner parole or escapes can give criminals another chance to kill.
It contributes to the problem of overpopulation in the prison system.
It gives prosecutors another bargaining chip in the plea bargain process, which is essential in cutting costs in an overcrowded court system.

Obviously I do not support the death penalty...it's stupid to say that it costs money to keep them in jail. BLASPHEMOUS! It costs more to do capital punishment!

They are not living in our society...they will live in jail. They are worth living for just like every other human being, that is your natural born rights.

Regardless of their title (Murderer, Rapist, Etc) at the end of the day they're still a human being just like you and I are. No human life is any more valuable than another, and you do NOT have the right bring down such a harsh judgment. You don't toy with the lives of others.

The fact that a murderer would rather be sentenced to a quick death than live and rot the rest of their lives in a cell clearly proves that they do indeed live w/ guilt.

Jail is an incredibly cruel place. They'll face all sorts of violence, discrimination, physical/sexual abuse etc. Stop acting like the death penalty is the only appropriate punishment for a murderer.

Contrary to some people's beliefs, lethal injection is not a humane way of killing.

Leonidas Koniaris (University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, USA) and colleagues analysed protocol information from the states of Texas and Virginia, where around 45% of executions are done. They found that executioners-typically one to three emergency medical technicians or medical corpsmen*-had no training in anaesthesia, drugs were administered remotely with no monitoring of anaesthesia and there were no data collection, documentation of anaesthesia, or post-procedure peer review. They also noted that neither state had a record of the creation of its protocol. The investigators also analysed data from autopsy toxicology reports from 49 executions in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. They found that concentrations of thiopental in the blood were lower than that required for surgery in 43 of the 49 executions; 21 inmates had concentrations consistent with awareness. The study suggests that the current practice of lethal injection for execution fails to even meet veterinary standards for putting down animals.

In an accompanying Editorial The Lancet comments: "Whether you receive the death penalty depends not on what you have done, but where you committed your crime, what colour your skin is, and how much money you have. The use of the death penalty not only varies from state to state (12 US states have no death penalty) but from jurisdiction to jurisdiction within a state. Repeated studies have shown a pattern of racial discrimination in the administration of the death penalty.
