Samus was also confirmed as lesbian. Zelda is trans. So, the OP is reaching. Same sex marriage was never in the game to begin with. It's a bug that confuses the game into thinking male characters are female.

If same sex marriage is now a confused mistake, I must have missed something.

The reach, it would just be too time consuming to go back and add an option like that when they already finished. Nintendo has tons of flamboyant male characters, they're always changed into females in American versions though.
