The only category I could EVER see Jessica Chastain win an Oscar for would be Best Supporting Actress. After all, she is just no A-list material, never was and never will be.
I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence and I'd be happy for her if she'd win the Oscar for Best Actress with SLP, BUT personally I wouldn't give her one for that role. Marion just shines more and gives more layers to her character without needing to over-act.

I didn't see Rust And Bone yet, but my problem is that she already has one and that could lower her chances of winning, especially seeing as all other contenders don't have one yet.

Girl stop, the bulk of Jessica's movies just came out LAST year and two of them were nominated for Best Picture (The Help and The Tree of Life) Jessica is a critics darling, has already landed an endorsement deal with YSL, and has already landed the cover of Vanity Fair TWICE in the SAME year, Jessica is heading for the A-list but she is doing it on her own terms because most of her movies are smaller releases besides The Help.

A character with a psychiatrich disease is not something really easy to act.
And we already know how much the Academy loves to award people acting characters with a disease. Besides, JLaw has a plus for achieving the performance at her young age...

I watched Rust & Bone and Marion is really impeccable there, BUT we all know that just great acting doesn't give you the Oscar. She won one just a few years ago and I don't think she has enough buzz.
I thought that Jennifer was pretty much safe until the first ZDT reviews came in, Jessica is coming as a very strong rival, it will be between them.

Is a strong rival, but not so great to go against JLaw, she's got HUGE buzz right now

I saw it some days ago, as well. Her acting was flawless and really strong but I think this year it's going to someone who doesn't have one yet.
Marion had quite some buzz at Cannes this year, though.

I think that Jennifer definitely has the advantage. She's Hollywood's IT girl right know, all the reviews more than praise her and most importantly: Harvey Weinstein behind her campaign. The thing about Jessica is that Kathryn and the studio kept ZDT under the sheets for quite a while, it didn't had screenings in any of the festivals, no interviews, no campaign, and the movie will only be release in mid Dec. These kind of releases tends to not give the actor/movie too much hype and buzz for when the ballots come in. I say we should wait to see how ZDT works out and how strong Jessica's buzz will be, because the reviews so far are beyond incredible.

True, but the Cannes buzz tends to dry out by the time of the nominations, it all depends on the US distribution.

Big chances for Anthony and Helen, not so much for the movie. It will be kinda like The Iron Lady: amazing performances, ok movie.

I'm still hoping Riva will snatch the Oscar from the two J's.
Also, was anyone else a little disappointed with the released clip of Chastain in ZDT? Don't get me wrong, I love the girl, but seeing how that's supposed to be her big Oscar-clip scene, I expected more.

Anne better not. This girl keeps flashing in my face about how she's predicted everything in the past so well and how she strongly believes Anne will lose.

So, reviews for Les Misèrables and Zero Dark Thirty are coming in and both have been very much praised and now are up there battling for Best Picture.
Apparently Anne is outstanding in LM, so is Hugh!
ZDT has been getting great reviews, BUT it's more of a documentary style film that tells the story and they're also saying the characters have no psychological depth. Chastain is getting praise, yes, but Lawrence gives a much more sentimental performance, so I think she has it in the bag.
I think what's interesting about this year is the Best Picture winner. There are a LOT of films which are now fighting for it: Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Misèrables, Zero Dark Thirty. Who the **** is going to win?

That would be awful if she would get snubbed. I remember how angry people were when Leo Dicaprio Michael Fassbender were snubbed this year.

The only one of the main categories I can see getting snubbed is Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor after he went on that diatribe about the Academy and the politics. It's really just between him and DDL for the win in that category and Joaquin had the hype much earlier.
Best Supporting Actor is probably the most wide open field this year

For some reason I still don't think Jennifer Lawrence has it in the bag that easily.

The film The Master. I could deal with Joaquin Phoenix getting nominated as he was great but the movie wasn't. (and I'm usually a fan of PT Anderson's films)

Me neither. I can't wait to see all the pre-cursors.

Life of Pi was ****ing brilliant. What categories is it getting buzz for? It être get best visuals or whatever that category is named + best cinematography. The 3D was just mindblowingly stunning. Better than avatar IMO for story and visuals but Avatar was more of a huge feat since it was CGI.

Prometheus
Skyfall
Snow White And The Huntsman
|

SAG heap high praise on the leading actor and Ang Lee's bold direction
Quote:
there is lots of Oscar buzz and Lee received standing ovations from the industry crowd at several screenings over the past week including the SAG Nominating Committee members who also stood for the young star, Sharma. They say never work with water, animals, kids, and in this case a first-time actor who had to do a highly emotional performance but Lee pulled it off.
