New pop-rock females have been seriously lacking on the music scene for the past few years, and it's songs like this that need to become hits in order to change this unfortunate trend. My Oh My sounds extremely like a KT Tunstall song, but this girl is not a copy, she has her own unique tone that I really love, it's such a deep, sultry voice. I'll admit I didn't know about her before this song but I'll certainly be looking out for any future efforts from her. It doesn't hurt that she's pretty damn attractive too. This is the only song by Tristan Prettyman in the list.
129 Allstar Weekend "Life As We Know It"
This song should be the anthem for anyone who believes of living in the moment and doing whatever they want. I mean... "this is life as we know it, gettin' high never growin' up, we party all night feelin' alright"? Pretty self-explanatory As much as I love songs with a deep emotional meaning, I like to have my fun too, and this is the perfect song to listen to whenever I'm in a good mood. I wish life was just as simple as they describe in the lyrics, but alas it can never be This is the only song by Allstar Weekend in the list.
128 Coldplay "Hurts Like Heaven"
Ugh...as much as I love Coldplay, and as catchy as this song may be, as a Coldplay stan I can't honestly say that this was a strong effort from them. I'm not quite sure what it is, maybe it's the fast beat of the song, or maybe it's Chris's voice, but it just doesn't really sound like a Coldplay song to me. It sounds too commercial and almost generic, and tbh I'm surprised this wasn't chosen as a pop single. But Coldplay still had some epic singles this era, a couple of which you will see later on, so don't think they'll be leaving my faves list anytime soon. This is the first of three songs by Coldplay in the list.
127 Colbie Caillat "Brighter Than the Sun"
So this song was released almost 1 1/2 years ago, Hot AC crossovers are always the biggest sleeper hits Unfortunately this one never really took off, probably because it was on the chart for so long before it finally broke the Top 50. Colbie and her songs are always so cute, and BTTS is no exception. The song is a perfect fit for her voice and the video is so eco-friendly, I love it I really wish Colbie could have another big hit in the US, maybe on her next album. This is the only song by Colbie Caillat in the list.
126 Train "50 Ways to Say Goodbye"
We've hit a streak of AC hits, so we might as well keep going with the AC staples Train. While I've been generally disappointed with their music lately, especially since they released masterpieces like Drops of Jupiter and Calling All Angels earlier in their career, I still found this song to be enjoyable. Pat always tries to write clever lyrics and sometimes they just come off as stupid, but this time I really did think they were funny. "Drowned in a hot tub, danced to death in an East Side nightclub" Plus the video with David Hasselhoff, and the mariachi band actually being in the video, I couldn't help but love it. This is the only song by Train in the list.
125 Alabama Shakes "Hold On"
And now we come to a song (and a band) that many of you have probably never heard of. They gained success in the rock community out of nowhere this year, and they're very critically acclaimed. As they should be, since the lead singer has a stunning voice. It's so gritty and bluesy and raspy, I can't even remember the last time I heard a voice like that, maybe never. She says she's 22 years old in the song and I have a hard time believing that, imagine how her voice will be in 20 years. I'm not feeling the song quite as much as I'm feeling the singer, but I'll still definitely keep my eye out for new material from this band. This is the only song by Alabama Shakes in the list.
124 Carly Rae Jepsen "This Kiss"
This is a great example of why I don't use chart stats to put together my Best Of. While CMM reached #2 on my countdown, and TK only got to #19, for some reason I've found myself liking this song better. Maybe it's the production, on this song it sounds much more like bubblegum pop which is one of my huge guilty pleasures. Or maybe it's just the fact that I couldn't avoid hearing CMM wherever I went and I just got so damn sick of it. Whatever the reason, I find this to be a very enjoyable song from Miss Jepsen and it's a shame that it flopped so badly. This is the only song by Carly Rae Jepsen in the list.
123 Gym Class Heroes f/Ryan Tedder "The Fighter"
And here are the Gym Class Heroes with (surprise, surprise) another collaboration. I really wish they'd do a song without a major pop/alternative feature, just Travie singing the chorus or something, because he proved he was a competent singer on his debut solo album. But anyways, back to this song. While I do feel like the theme in the lyrics is a little tired: "no matter how many times someone pushes me down, I'll always get back up and keep trying", it's a very motivational song nonetheless, and I get the feeling that it's a personal (autobiographical?) song for Travie. Of course you can't go wrong with Ryan Tedder on your chorus, so much of a better feature than that Neon Hitch. This is the last of two songs by Gym Class Heroes on the list.
122 Kelly Clarkson "Catch My Breath"
Oh Kelly sis. What happened? Even though Kelly is one of my favorite pop-rock artists, and she delivers her great vocals as always, this song is just so painfully bland. I feel like this is a formula she's fallen into a lot lately, I want the Because of You / Behind These Hazel Eyes / Sober Kelly back. But even Mr. Know It All and Stronger were better than this. It didn't help the song's case either when she released that music video, if you've seen it I don't think I really need to explain what's wrong with it. However it is a lead single from a Greatest Hits compilation, and those are almost never the artist's strongest work, so I'll be anticipating something better for Kelly's next album. This is the first of three songs by Kelly Clarkson in the list.
121 Gavin DeGraw "Not Over You"
Yet another leftover from 2011 that literally took forever to become a hit. Now don't get me wrong I love Gavin, but this was not one of his stronger efforts. The song wore off pretty quickly and it's lucky that I didn't get into it until later in its run because if I'd have gotten into it earlier, it almost certainly wouldn't be on this countdown. Chariot and In Love With a Girl >>>>>> Not Over You. Fortunately Gavin was able to bounce back with a much stronger second single which we will see later on in the countdown. This is the first of two songs by Gavin DeGraw in the list.
I admit Hurts Like Heaven is the worst single from Mylo but I like them so much that I liked this too
I listened to 50 Ways more before it was a single because it grew up old fast on me. I find it funny and well-done as a track and the video amplified its craziness
Too bad This Kiss is flopping cause it's actually a good track but I would've still preferred Curiosity
