Just like how people BUY albums in order for artists to get that certification. Regardless of who BOUGHT the album, a million copies were PAID for in order for Rihanna to get the certification and paycheck. Queen of being business savvy.

RIAA certifies the number of shipments sold to music stores, not the number of people that bought the album through these same stores. Think Sasmung as one big retail store, they bought these copies there which counts towards RIAA certification numbers.
