Initial reviews and year-end lists are always contradictory, partially because initial reviews are determined by one person, whereas a year-end list is determined by a "staff."
I know that, but that still ties into inconsistency. In the case of Britney with MTV, the article calling Femme Fatale one of the best pop albums of 2011 and one of her best works came out like a day after the year-end list IIRC. That's just a mess.
This is kinda true, what they do is absolute perfection within their limits, but it doesn't reinvent the wheel. I think TFM is a pop album in a similar vein, in that it is a slimmed down, tight collection of fantastic songs that flow well, and it did not get an 85 on metacritic.
