(Note) This was written in German, so I used Google Translate to change it to English.
Last night, Marina Diamandis aka Marina & The Diamonds played at the “Michalsky Style Night” in Berlin’s “Tempodrom”. We visited them during the sound check and in her wardrobe trailer and talked to her about fashion, music and their inspiration.
Interview: Your new album “Electra Heart” will appear soon. Are you excited?
Marina: And how! But above all I am. The songs are almost all ready-mixed and soon the release date set. Then off you go!
Interview: Do you play tonight songs from your new album?
Marina: I play tonight, only two songs - and “Hollywood” and “I Am Not A Robot” from my old album, “The Family Jewels”.
Interview: You step on today evening as part of Fashion Week. How important is fashion?
Marina: Very important. That’s why I regret also that I can look at me no show. I Love Berlin Fashion Week and would like to visit here. But maybe I can do it even to go to a party? Who knows! In London but I’m incredibly happy to Fashion Week.
Interview: And you then you look at certain designer?
Marina: “Dolce & Gabbana” I really like, just like Christopher Kane and Gareth Pugh. And I love Helmut Lang! My dress that I’m going to wear tonight is from him.
Interview: Are you more loyal to a style or you constantly are changing?
Marina: I am changing constantly! When I recorded my first album, I had my pop-art stage, so I did a lot of yellow, red and others attracted to bright colors. Now I’m more of a pastel phase. I wear a lot of mint and lavender, everything is soft. I’ve become calmer, less wild, and it shows.
Interview: Has this had an impact on your new album?
Marina: I work conceptually. When I recorded “The Family Jewels”, it was important for me to capture moods and tell me. This time I let myself be inspired more by art and fashion, because I am now much more aware of the aesthetic aspect bin. Books have played the biggest role. I’ve read a lot of American writers from the sixties, for example, Hunter S. Thompson.
Interview: Who produced your new album?
Marina: I recorded a few songs with Dr. Luke, who has also worked with Katy Perry and Britney Spears. In addition, Liam Howe has again helped me. With him I’ve been working together for long.
Interview: You sound like Britney then on your new album?
Marina: (laughs) Yeah, but just as you would if Britney turned on its head. I’m a twisted Britney!
Interview: Thank you for your time!
