The increased homophobia is a
symptom of the poverty. The poorer you are, the more likely you are to cling to religion and everything that goes with it. Also the governments in those countries will target people like the LGBT to distract the people from the real problems (like corruption). It's easier to satiate the general public by creating a "villain" to go after. Unfortunately it's usually those who are LGBT, as there isn't enough knowledge to combat the fear.
To say that the entire population (bar the gay people) of a entire country are trash is disgusting.
