The Holly Wood Reporter's 10 TV Pilots Likely to Score Series Pickups
As broadcast network executives sit behind closed doors pouring over focus group testing results on a whopping 100 pilots and which among them can best fill their needs, scores of showrunners are on stand-by as the decisions on which comedies and dramas will land slots on the 2013-14 schedules are expected to come starting Wednesday.
The Hollywood Reporter dialed up industry insiders and has compiled 10 of the thrillers, soapy procedurals, comic adaptations, family and workplace comedies that stand the best shot of earning series pickups.
1. Beverly Hills Cop (CBS)
From executive producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield), the continuation of the feature film franchise tested through the roof and is considered perfectly on-brand for CBS. The cop drama starring Brandon T. Jackson as Axel Foley's rookie cop son is described as a procedural that comes wrapped with instant brand recognition and an easy to market premise -- and Eddie Murphy attached. Plus Beverly Hills Cop feature producer Paramount also handpicked the Sony Pictures Television drama to make its return to TV production.
2. Mom (CBS)
We hope Chuck Lorre uses part of his summer break to pen a lot of vanity cards as the prolific showrunner is poised to have four shows on the air. Mom, starring Anna Faris as a newly sober single mom attempting to get her life in order, has been considered a sure thing to make the schedule since Lorre and his Two and a Half Men co-writers Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker sold the spec to CBS. The show also marks Lorre's first female-fronted comedy since the 1990s. With How I Met Your Mother coming to an end after next season, CBS needs to find a new half-hour that works (RIP, Partners.)
3. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC)
ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee was already mulling a place on the schedule for the Marvel comics adaptation from The Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind Joss Whedon back in January, touting the Ming-Na starrer as a prime family viewing. Industry insiders, meanwhile, envision the drama as a solution for ABC's Thursday at 8 p.m. problem -- a slot that's been problematic for years (see Charlie's Angels, Last Resort).
4. Tomorrow People (CW)
The adaptation of the 1970s U.K. series of the same name fits right into the younger-skewing network's sci-fi wheelhouse and comes with a built in pedigree featuring two of the network's most valued creators: The Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec and Arrow's Greg Berlanti. The drama tells the story of several young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution, possessing special powers, including the ability to teleport and communicate with each other telepathically. Together they work to defeat the forces of evil.
5. The Goldbergs (ABC)
The dysfunctional Wonder Years set in the 1980s is inspired by the childhold of Breaking In creator Adam F. Goldberg and counts Bridesmaids breakout Wendi McLendon-Covey among its cast. The family-friendly single-camera comedy has been generating great buzz coming out of last week's pilot screenings.
6. Blacklist (NBC)
Billed as "one of the best scripts of the year" by one TV agent, the drama about the world's most wanted criminal who turns himself in comes with a star with major TV appeal in James Spader, who would make his return to NBC following his run on The Office. Consider the drama from Perfect Stranger's Jon Bokenkamp and Alias' John Eisendrath this year's Revolution.
7. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox)
Fox is expected to pickup at least one, potentially two workplace comedies as it shops for a companion to the already renewed The Mindy Project. Expect the cop comedy from Parks and Recreation duo Dan Goor and Mike Schur to be among them. Oh, and the cast happens to include Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher and Terry Crews, the latter of whom was one of pilot season's most sought-after actors.
8. Rake (Fox)
After luring Kevin Bacon to his first small-screen regular role in The Following, look for Fox to repeat that strategy with Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear starring in the adaptation of the Australian drama. The Little Miss Sunshine alum plays a House-like character described as a brilliant but self-destructive attorney in the project from Rescue Me's Peter Tolan.
9. Crisis (aka the untitled Rand Ravich drama) (NBC)
The Washington thriller starring Dermot Mulroney and Gillian Anderson has the slight edge over J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron's Believe. The drama from the creator of Life has also been generating rave reviews for its cast, which also includes 666 Park's Rachael Taylor and James Lafferty (One Tree Hill). Look for cable-type fare in the vein of Homeland to feature prominently among NBC's drama pickups.
10. Reign (CW)
The CW will likely hand out three additional series orders beyond Plec's Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals and add the drama about Mary Queen of Scots' rise to power as its big swing. Sources say the network likes the international appeal of Reign, which filmed in Europe and counts a largely unknown cast led by Adelaide Kane in her second stateside role (she'll next be seen in the upcoming third season of MTV's Teen Wolf.)

Will ABC’S ‘Body Of Proof’ Break The Retool Curse With Renewal?
When it returned for a third season in February, ABC’s Body of Proof appeared destined to join the scores of other series that have died a quick death after a major retooling. The crime procedural starring Dana Delany opened with a 1.2/3 in 18-49, down an alarming 45% from its Season 2 premiere and tied as a series low, and 6.8 million total viewers. But unlike two other dramas that crashed and burnt with retooled versions this midseason, NBC’s Smash and Fox’s Touch, Body Of Proof has improved on its underwhelming start. Since Episode 5, the show has not fallen under 1.4 18-49 rating and 8.4 million total viewers. And last week, the drama hit a 1.6 in 18-49 and 9.3 million viewers, matching its season high in the demo and posting its second largest audience of the season. It won the 10 PM hour, beating CBS’ Golden Boy by 14% in 18-49 and 1.4 million viewers. While older skewing, Body of Proof ranks as ABC’s third most watched drama, only behind Dancing With The Stars-buoyed Castle and flagship Grey’s Anatomy.
What’s more, I hear ABC brass are happy with the reworked version of Body of Proof, which they consider an improvement over the original series creatively. Additionally, the procedural is a major moneymaker for ABC sibling ABC Studios with strong international sales. Cancelling the show as it heads into Season 4 would be detrimental to Disney-ABC’s bottom line, especially after Body of Proof won the California tax credit lottery, making it even more appealing financially. Tonight is the show’s last chance to make its case for renewal before ABC makes its pickup decisions for next season. If it succeeds, Body Of Proof will become the first in long line of retooled shows, that also includes NBC’s Law & Order: LA, Harry’s Law and Up All Night, Fox’s Human Target and USA’s Fairly Legal, to survive the revamp.

Looks like I may get this one wrong this year! I predicted its cancellation last season and was wrong too haha

Chuck Lorre’s CBS Pilot ‘Mom’ To Get Series Order Tomorrow
The “C” in CBS can now officially stand for Chuck as top producer Chuck Lorre will have four series on the network in the fall. I’ve learned that CBS will pick up Lorre’s comedy pilot Mom to series tomorrow, a full week before the network’s upfront presentation. It will be the first pilot from this year’s crop to get a series order. A select few A-list producers get early pickup deadlines from the networks, giving them a window to shop the projects elsewhere if they get a pass. Lorre understandably is in that category with an unusually early deadline for Mom this year even by those standards. Not that there has ever been any doubt that CBS would exercise its option to pick up Mom to series. Written on spec by Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker, Mom has been sailing through the pilot process with a hot script, top-notch cast led by Anna Faris and Allison Janney and great table read and taping that led to a finished pilot that has been well received. The series, produced by Warner Bros TV and Chuck Lorre Prods., centers on a newly sober single mom (Faris) who tries to pull her life together in Napa Valley. It is eyed for the Monday 8:30 PM slot following the final season of How I Met Your Mother – which is exec produced/directed by Pam Fryman, who also helmed the Mom pilot. Despite his tremendous workload, Lorre focused a lot of energy and passion on Mom this season. He will now have the rare distinction of having four series on the schedule in the fall: Mom and the returning Two And A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly. The Mom cast also includes Nate Corddry, Blake Garrett Rosenthal, Matt Jones, Spencer Daniels, Sadie Calvano and French Stewart.
With one of the CBS comedy slots going to Mom as expected, attention will shift to the fierce competition for the other berths. If CBS expands in comedy as speculated, given that the network brass seem higher on their comedy development versus drama this season, estimates are that the network could pick up as many as four new comedy series for next season, leaving three slots for the multi-camera Greg Garcia and Friends With Better Lives and single-camera Rob Greenberg and Crazy Ones as well as a potential wild card from several others who are in contention when testing results come in.

If I had to bet money one 1 show guaranteed to get picked up to series I'd have put it on Mom haha

Upfronts Pregame Analysis: Fallen Idol, Wounded Fox
We're just days away from the start of Upfront Week, with news about the new season already starting to trickle out: On Tuesday, Deadline reported that CBS is picking up Chuck Lorre's new comedy Mom. Before the TV world kicks off its annual May Madness on Monday, Vulture is concentrating on where the major networks stand right now in a shaky period for the industry. We've already given the once-over to NBC and ABC, and today it's time to see how Fox has been doing. The network found a healthy following for The Following, but otherwise, this was a season Fox executives are in a hurry to forget.
Where It Stands
Numbers don't lie, but Fox's second-place standing with adults under 50 among all networks doesn't tell the whole story about what's been a pretty bad season for the broadcaster. It's not just that Fox has surrendered the demo ratings crown (to CBS) after an unprecedented eight-year run as Nielsen champ. It was bound to slip out of first eventually, and in any case, the weekly ratings race is something of a beauty contest. What's shocking is how far Fox has fallen, and how fast: It's down nearly 25 percent from last season, the biggest one-season reversal of fortune for a network since ABC lost 20 percent of its audience during the 2000-01 season. Much of this is because Fox's longtime cure-all, American Idol, finally became mortal this year. It's lost a full quarter of its audience versus 2012, and it's no longer the top show in TV (or even the top singing competition; that's now NBC's The Voice). But other unscripted Fox shows have also taken a tumble: The X Factor dropped nearly 20 percent from a disappointing freshman season; Gordon Ramsay's food-focused competitions were down double digits; and even old reliable Cops dived in the ratings (and was then canceled after 25 years on the network, but just picked up by Spike). Fox's scripted shows also took a hit, with every single returning series (except for Bob's Burgers) declining this year (including distressing 23 percent hits for sophomore New Girl and veteran Raising Hope). The fall was also a waste for Fox's new shows, with The Mob Doctor and the sweet comedy Ben and Kate both pretty much dead on arrival. And while some Vulture writers' love of The Mindy Project is no secret (something a few commenters never miss the chance to point out), it's struggled in the ratings. (On the plus side, Mindy has taken advantage of its New Girl lead-in to become the top new comedy with viewers under 35, and Fox has renewed it for a second season.)
Not everything's a bummer for Fox, however. The Following is a bona fide hit, with DVR playback lifting it to the No. 2 new show overall this season (and possibly No. 1 if Revolution continues to fade over on NBC). The serial-killer thriller's accomplishment is particularly impressive because its lead-in was the modestly rated Bones and it went head-to-head with the Peacock's en fuego talent competition The Voice. Whether The Following can keep its momentum going into next season is an open question, but Fox deserves credit for potentially launching a new drama franchise with bigger numbers than the buzzier Scandal or Once Upon a Time. What's more, as painful as the Idol and X declines have been, both shows (particularly Idol) remain significant assets for Fox: At a time when all of the networks, including Fox, are debuting new show after new show with less than 2.0 demo ratings, both reality competitions supply Fox with three to four weekly hours of ratings above a 3.0 among viewers under 50. That leaves Fox a lot more breathing room to hunt for new scripted hits (or give shows such as Mindy more time to build an audience). Fox insiders believe the network will be back in first next season because of its broadcasts of the Super Bowl and the NFC championship. CBS executives would likely disagree, but assuming Fox has a few hits among its crop of newcomers, it's a very achievable goal.
Buzziest Prospects
The pilot for Rake would have to be very bad not to get a slot: It stars Greg Kinnear as a House-like lawyer, and it seems genetically engineered for Fox's Monday night lineup. We've also been hearing great things for months about Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the Barney Miller–like police comedy starring Andy Samberg (and produced by Parks and Rec's Mike Schur), while the network has already given a series order to Dads, the Seth MacFarlane–produced comedy about two guys (Seth Green, Giovanni Ribisi) whose fathers move back in with them. There's also been buzz that Fox is fond of the Stripes-like military comedy Enlisted.
Biggest Headache
While the Idol decline contributed most to Fox's overall Nielsen dive, there's only so much the network can do to reverse gravity on that show after twelve seasons. (We'd start with finding a new set of executive producers, but that's just us.) So look for Fox to focus on boosting its Tuesday comedy lineup. We assume New Girl and Mindy will remain paired (or at least air on the same night), but Fox needs to find a way to boost both shows and also inject some new blood into the night. Raising Hope seems a logical anchor in the fall, but eventually Fox may want to experiment with a new 8 p.m. anchor. The Samberg show could be noisy enough to kick off the night. Fox might also want to flood Tuesdays with original product year-round, perhaps scheduling its comedies in such a way that minimizes repeats and allows the network to experiment by launching more half-hours throughout the season.
Bottom Line
Since 2008, Fox has given multiple seasons to a number of shows (Raising Hope, Fringe, Lie to Me), but it's only had three undeniable live-action scripted hits (Glee, New Girl, The Following). Three home runs in five years is not a very good development track record, but nobody really noticed: The remarkable success of Idol over the past decade hid the failures. Now that Idol has come back down to Earth, Fox needs to start taking more shots, including in the summer, and hope that its two music competitions stabilize in the ratings. It's still in far better shape than either ABC or NBC, and CBS is not without its own problems. But Fox really, really needs some new hits.

ABC’s ‘Castle’ Eyes Two-Season Pickup
As ABC’s Castle gears up for its fifth season finale, there is no doubt that the series will be renewed for next season. But I hear ABC is considering giving the quirky procedural starring Nathan Fillion a two-year pickup, which will bring it to seven seasons. That must be gratifying for Caste and its producers as the show spent the first couple of seasons on the bubble until establishing itself as a solid ratings performer with strong fan following. In fact, with help from lead-in Dancing With The Stars, Castle currently ranks as ABC’s most watched drama series. Castle is among several ABC series whose renewal is guaranteed, including Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Modern Family, Once Upon A Time, Revenge and The Middle, along with unscripted Shark Tank, which is already casting for next season, Dancing With The Stars, which could potentially scale back on the number of cycles per season, and The Bachelor.

Would be a smart decision especially with it doing pretty well in Syndication already
Also TVBTN is reporting Mom has been picked up but it's still not official yet

Also NBC has passed on The Night Shift (aka After Hours)
Update: The Night Shift obituary was premature. In the flurry of passes, the pilot was erroneously bundled with those who are definitely dead, but it appears that no calls on it have been made yet. So if you worked on that pilot or have clients on it, you can breath easier, at least for now.
That might be it for shows being passed on tonight but I'll keep looking

I really hope there are some great new shows this year. The 2012-2013 season was abysmal for new shows, but the 2011-2012 season had so many fantastic new ones.

Sleepy Hollow
From co-creators/executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (the “Star Trek” and “Transformers” franchises, “Fringe”), the thrilling new action-adventure SLEEPY HOLLOW is a modern-day retelling of Washington Irving’s classic. ICHABOD CRANE (Tom Mison) is resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to find that the world is on the brink of destruction and that he is humanity’s last hope, forcing him to team up with a contemporary police officer (Nicole Beharie) to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to the founding fathers.SLEEPY HOLLOW is from K/O Paper Products in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series is co-created by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Phillip Iscove and Len Wiseman (“Hawaii Five-0,” “Underworld” and “Total Recall”). The series is executive-produced by Kurtzman, Orci and Wiseman and Heather Kadin. Iscove serves as supervising producer. Wiseman directed the pilot.
Rake
Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Greg Kinnear makes his broadcast television series debut with the bold new legal drama RAKE, from executive producer Peter Tolan and creator/executive producer Peter Duncan, who created the hit Australian series of the same name. RAKE centers on Keegan Deane, one of life’s great addicts, a brilliant and frustratingly charming criminal defense attorney, whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one. He takes on the cases that nobody else will touch, ruled by a resolute optimism, belief in justice and dogged determination to defend those who seem beyond redemption – much like himself.RAKE is produced by Fedora Entertainment and Essential Media & Entertainment Pty Ltd., in association with Sony Pictures Television. The series is created and written by Peter Duncan (creator of the original Australian series). The series is executive-produced by Duncan, Peter Tolan (“Rescue Me,” “Analyze This”), Michael Wimer (“2012”), Richard Roxburgh (“Rake,” “Mission: Impossible II,” “Moulin Rouge”) and Ian Collie (“Rake”). Kinnear and Leslie Tolan (“Rescue Me,” “The Job”) are co-executive producers. Sam Raimi (“Oz the Great and Powerful,” “Spider-Man” franchise) directed and served as an executive producer on the pilot.
Gang Related
GANG RELATED, a gritty new action drama, follows Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez), a rising star in Los Angeles’ elite Gang Task Force – led by SAM CHAPEL (Emmy Award winner Terry O’Quinn) — who teams up with longtime Task Force member CASSIUS GREEN (RZA) to take on three of the city’s most dangerous gangs, including one he has ties to.GANG RELATED is from Chris Morgan Productions, Skeeter Rosenbaum Productions, Imagine Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television. The series is created and written by Chris Morgan (“Wanted,” “Fast Five”). The series is executive-produced by Morgan, Scott Rosenbaum (“The Shield,” “Chuck”), Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer (“24,” “A Beautiful Mind”) and Francie Calfo (“The Great Escape,” “The Playboy Club”). Allen Hughes (“Dead Presidents,” “Book of Eli,” “Menace II Society”) directed and served as an executive producer on the pilot.
Almost Human
From Emmy Award-winning executive producer J.J. Abrams and creator/executive producer J.H. Wyman and starring Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and Emmy Award nominee Lili Taylor, ALMOST HUMAN (working title) is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely connection is forged when a cop with an aversion to robots and a robot with unexpected emotional responses investigate cases in a brave new world. ALMOST HUMAN (wt) is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The series is created by J.H. Wyman, who wrote the pilot. The series is executive-produced by Wyman, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Kathy Lingg (“Person of Interest,” “Revolution,” “Fringe”) and Reid Shane (“Fringe”) are co-executive producers. Brad Anderson (“Fringe,” “The Killing”) directed and served as co-executive producer on the pilot.
