Well let's see both of these women blew up out of nowhere and where known for their weird fashion styles. They both where seen as more talented alternatives (to the madonna and katy perry which where seen as jokes) and where both described as many as having a longer career.
Both of their debut albums (Gaga and Cyndi) outsold the other two and garnered them immediate acclaim, along with releasing a string of smash hit singles, and breaking billboard records.
Their second album's showed a contrast with the previous album demonstrating a more personal side whilst commenting on social issues. See Cyndi Lauper "What's Going On'. One of their songs on the second CD became well known staples in the gay community (see true colors and BTW).
Their third albums had one big hit but the rest of the singles under performed. Their album didn't sell as well compared to the first two, as well as garnered a more lukewarm reception critically as opposed to the first two.
That's how I see it, and Katy has more similarities in her career to Madonna. But I don't want to make this post too long
