It's both, but the latter are far more insufferable.
Anyone who thinks any aspect of America is "basically a third world countey" is just proving they know nothing about anything. And they sure as hell haven't traveled abroad (to anywhere outside Europe or North America generally). Probably don't even own a passport.

the thing is, europeans came to america in 1492 because they were oppressed in the old world and wanted religious and personal freedoms.. but the United States of America of today stands for the opposite now: political and religious, racial and sexual oppression while western europe, especially the 3 biggest heritage groups: Ireland, UK & Germany have pushed centuries ahead of the US in liberalism, political and personal freedom.
In the end, Europe won. we have healthcare, we have social security, freedom of press, culture etc. The US has creationists, republicans, trump, economical espionage and corruption.

the US definitely has freedom of press, or else you wouldn't even be hearing about all of this apparent oppressiveness. and social security has been in the US since the 1930s 
and clearly the UK and germany are more liberal and have more personal freedom even though germany hasn't even legalized gay marriage yet and the US has
and lol sure, europe definitely has no corruption at all. have you ever read anything about politics in your life? i guess all of the deep-rooted oppressive systems and dynamics in europe just magically disappeared one day and now they have no corruption ever
i guess europe isn't influenced by religion at all anymore? even though it had long-lasting wars about it for well over a century, all of their religious passion must have all magically gone away too
but i guess you can think whatever dumb "facts" you want as long as it's against ameriKKKa

Europeans know JACK about the U.S. and think that it's some sort of war zone over here 
We have tons of wackos, tension, and corruption here, but that is common of literally EVERY first world country. At least the U.S. is willing to display its problems and have them discussed while Europe likes to ignore the fact that ISIS is playing ring around the rosie across the continent and plotting more bloody terrorist attacks as I type this.

Apparently Europe is a giant field of rainbows and butterflies where everyone treats each other with love and respect, racism and homophobia don't exist, politics has no corruption at all, no terrorist attacks ever occur, and religion is not practiced.
Poor us not getting to join in as the Muslims immigrants from the Middle East and Germans, French, Dutch, etc. dance around in a circle singing songs from the Mary Poppins soundtrack.

The same applies for american people. 
You know nothing and you still pretend to understand what's going on in Europe. Moreover ISIS is going to be a global threat, not only for Europe. We are just the closer ones right now. We all have direct responsabilities in this (US included. Do you REALLY want to start this??). This has nothing to do with racism (which surely is an issue in Europe, as well as in the US). It is a religious and economical issue. You act like Europeans talk **** about Americans (the OP himself is american though), and you are doing exactly the same thing (roles inverted).
Anyway, I disagree with the OP. I think the whole so called First World is experimenting similar issues with racism, I don't think Europe is so much different. But I do thing that there are countries in Europe really ahead on the matter (such as Sweden, Norway and Finland). UK as well to an extent.

I visited Sweden and Norway and Finland and I saw one other minority of any kind. So they aren't so advanced. There is not diversity in those countries at the scale of even the UK let alone the US.

Honestly its just a personal opinion/experience, I've seen so many people online and offline that are so backwards and retarded, especially the white people in the south. But to be fair in this topic the US does have a lot of people like that(Idk if it's really the majority of the country) because it's too big.
Is just shocking to see the most powerful and supposedly advanced country with that many people with that mentality. That's it.
