55. Lady Gaga- Yoü and I
This powerful country-rock ballad was released as the fourth single from Lady Gaga's 2011 album
Born This Way, much to the chagrin of many fans who thought it was too generic and likely to flop. However, a very interesting (to say the least) video helped propel the song to the Top 10, where it stayed for five weeks. Personally, my second-least favorite single off of
Born This Way (Judas was worse), but on such a great album it's really not such a bad thing.
This is the first of three songs by Lady Gaga on the chart.
54. Avril Lavigne- What the Hell
This was just one of those songs in 2011 that everyone either loved or hated. People who loved it argued it was extremely catchy, while people who hated it argued it was extremely annoying. I didn't really get all the hate for such a catchy and innocent song reminiscent of her biggest hit and only #1, "Girlfriend". Did "Girlfriend" get as much hate when it went to #1? I wouldn't know, since I had never heard of ATRL, or any other pop music forums for that matter, in 2007. That being said, I really liked "What the Hell" and was very sad to see it stop just short of the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10.
This is the last of three songs by Avril Lavigne on the chart.
53. Lil Wayne- How to Love
Whoever thought we would ever be associating the words "heartfelt ballad" with Lil Wayne? I certainly didn't, but "How to Love" was just another one of the big musical surprises in 2011. When I first heard Lil Wayne would be singing on his third single from
Tha Carter IV, I didn't know what to expect, because in 2009 he tried singing rock music on his album
Rebirth with somewhat disastrous results. However, "How to Love" was a very pleasant surprise for me and became one of my top tracks of summer 2011.
This is the only song by Lil Wayne on the chart.
52. Nicki Minaj- Super Bass
Instead of releasing an already successful and critically acclaimed song off the #1 album
Pink Friday as her fifth single (Roman's Revenge or Fly), Nicki Minaj made a very interesting decision by releasing the bonus track and very pop-leaning song "Super Bass". Many people discredited her for this, saying she was going all mainstream and too desperate for a pop hit. However, after introducing herself to the pop audience with songs like "Moment 4 Life" and "Your Love", a genuine pop smash was what she needed, and "Super Bass" achieved that very well. Plus I LOVED the video. So much eye candy
This is the last of two songs by Nicki Minaj on the chart.
51. Bruno Mars- It Will Rain
Let me start out by saying, I thought Bruno Mars was such an idiot for not releasing "Marry You" as a single. It wasn't one of my favorites off the album, but it's obvious that it would have smashed hard and spent multiple weeks at #1. However, "It Will Rain" more than made up for it. It wasn't quite as epic or unexpected of a hit as "Grenade", but it definitely had the same sort of vibe, and I will be looking for it to go #1 in the near future.
This is the first of two songs by Bruno Mars on the chart.
Told you it would get mainstream
However in the next couple sets we have the Red Hot Chili Peppers and 30 Seconds to Mars. Get excited
